Thanks for pointing out the hole - security is a good thing.

Hmm, so even the unofficial 2.95 isn't safe? Well I've had WinAmp 5.03a with classic skin on my 6-year-old computer for about a week now and it's light 'n stable enough (previous 5.0x versions were not) so I can finally get rid of that 2.95.

Any version of winamp prior to 5.03 is unsafe.

SB: There's just as much chance of iTunes having an unknown security hole in it.

I didn't notice a lick of difference between winamp and foobar, except foobar has a horrible GUI and no options worth mentioning.

Try using Kernel Streaming and having a decent audio setup ;-)

Also, the playlist manager is so utterly fantastic. Combined with the extended search plugin, the ability to search is beyond fantastic. Also, add Foo_looks into things, and you get a 100% customizable GUI.

Though, you don't get it for the GUI. The motivation behind it is quality and small overhead.

to each his own. I like winamp playlist...especially in winamp 5. and the sound quality thing is prolly due to my soundcard, which I plan on replacing this summer. (AC 97....hehehe)

I used to use winamp exclusively, but had issues with sound quality on some tracks. Noticed little things here, little things there, which nagged me into the ground (as I also listened to the original CDs on occasion). Nailed it down to the decoder, and bammo. Switched, and have been as insane as ever. Though, I still use winamp 5 for Internet TV.

Though, yeah, Each to their own. I just happen to preach FooBar. :D

I installed Itunes for the sake of argument. Right off the bat, it crashes IE, and when it finishes installing, it tells me to restart my computer. (winamp does not require a reboot)

    winamp 1, itunes 0

I try to build my playlist. Click and dragging my MP3 directory for some reason doesn't work, so I tell it to 'open folder'. It hums to itself, then crashes when it reaches a midi file.

    winamp 2, itunes 0

When I finished manually selecting songs to avoid midis, I listened for a while, but couldn't hear any difference between winamp and itunes playback. I cranked up the 'sound enhancer', but it seems to be just basically an equalizer function - not all that impressive.
The seach function is nifty, but not useful - I prefer just hitting 'j'.

    winamp 2, itunes 1 (barely)

I didn't test any of the streaming stuff, and I live in Canada, so I can't make use of their store, either. Thanks, but I'll stick with winamp.
Also, the visualizer? Just plain sissy. :)

EDIT: On further examination, you also can't jump within the song using the arrow keys. Uncool!

Ok, then explain the why alot of people that use iTunes want to convert AAC to mp3 just so they can play their tunes on winamp or take them on the road? Explain why millions of users use WinAMP over anything else.
