Give me a reason to use lunix...

OK, I've used windows since the days of windows 3.11

I'm used to it, and with winXP, I LIKE it.

so, give me a reason to use Lunix.

I know blender will run, how about my ATI 9800 Pro? Drivers? Games? All that fun stuff...

I think you can forget about games.

I've never heard of lunix, but I hear linux is good. ;)

Seriously though, this is something you'll have to research on your own. Download a copy of Mandrake Move (Mandrake's version of Knoppix for the linux n00bies) and burn it to CD. Then just boot to it and see if you like it.

    ATI: yes.
Drivers: well... you don't actually need the same drivers so this is kinda irrelevant. Unless you meant hardware, if so in just about all cases yes.
Games: That depends on the game. If it's a DirectX game, no. That's what dual booting is for. :)

I would highly recommend you do as Vert suggested. You'd be surprised how many of the apps you commonly use in Windows have equivalent apps in linux that are as good or better.

I would rather go with Linux instead of windows.

But again you can forget about game:(

I've got a friend who reformated his computer to run linux this weekend. His one reason: "I'm bored"

However, he seems happy with it :) He doesn't play many games though.

He should try a real distribution. He'd be overjoyed. :)

I wish I could get Linux to run on my laptop (when it was working, that is)

I'd be so overjoyed if I could do that, but I"ve had ACPI Issues.
  • BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
The 2.6 kernel is good. ACPI just goes. :)

    well this is annoying....

I get the nice little option screen to start mandrake...

I press Enter, it uncompresses....OK. Starting Kernal...

then it stops doing anything. and my Capslock and Scroll lock lights start blinking...

    nothing else. :(

Try acpi=off as a boot option.

A reason to use Linux ? Easy... one word...

    Mandrake is very cool...

9.1 is very stable too... I know 9.2 and 10 are out now but... :)

If it wasn't for the fact tha Photoshop and Lightwave are Windows, i'd be a total convert.

Gimp is ok, but it just doesn't have the PS workflow I'm used to...

    :)

    Photoshop works under Wine.

Well, by the time the 2.6 Kernel came out, the battery's cells were long gone

linux is very stable, unless of course your linux box is connected to an MRI machine and the GE software is loaded onto it, then it becomes just as unstable as windows 3.1.

but seriously, linux is nice and there is even a program out now for linux that emulates a windows directx environment. I forget what its called, and have not used it so I dont know if its any good, but its out there.

Im going to put together a dual boot linux box pretty soon Ill tell you how it works.

    You're probably thinking of WineX.
