OK, I've used windows since the days of windows 3.11
I'm used to it, and with winXP, I LIKE it.
so, give me a reason to use Lunix.
I know blender will run, how about my ATI 9800 Pro? Drivers? Games? All that fun stuff...

Seriously though, this is something you'll have to research on your own. Download a copy of Mandrake Move (Mandrake's version of Knoppix for the linux n00bies) and burn it to CD. Then just boot to it and see if you like it.

ATI: yes.
Drivers: well... you don't actually need the same drivers so this is kinda irrelevant. Unless you meant hardware, if so in just about all cases yes.
Games: That depends on the game. If it's a DirectX game, no. That's what dual booting is for. :)
I would highly recommend you do as Vert suggested. You'd be surprised how many of the apps you commonly use in Windows have equivalent apps in linux that are as good or better.

I'd be so overjoyed if I could do that, but I"ve had ACPI Issues.
I get the nice little option screen to start mandrake...
I press Enter, it uncompresses....OK. Starting Kernal...
then it stops doing anything. and my Capslock and Scroll lock lights start blinking...
nothing else. :(

9.1 is very stable too... I know 9.2 and 10 are out now but... :)
If it wasn't for the fact tha Photoshop and Lightwave are Windows, i'd be a total convert.
Gimp is ok, but it just doesn't have the PS workflow I'm used to...
:)
The 2.6 kernel is good. ACPI just goes. :)
Well, by the time the 2.6 Kernel came out, the battery's cells were long gone
but seriously, linux is nice and there is even a program out now for linux that emulates a windows directx environment. I forget what its called, and have not used it so I dont know if its any good, but its out there.
Im going to put together a dual boot linux box pretty soon Ill tell you how it works.
