Those are indeed pretty damn sweet, Biggles. Is the Vanship one your own design? (although I do recognize the ship from Last Exile)
I struggled with some of those Homeworld ships for a while last week, but haven't had much luck - the harvester engines absolutely defeat me, and the missile frigate's front underection currently has me at a standstill.
And then I moved, and somebody crammed all the models between socks, almost completely destroying them (insert weeping here). Ah, well, maybe the next time I try this stuff it'll work out.
But it did inspire me to convert one of my older mascots into paper form - VEN-DOR! An ambulatory, rage-filled vending machine possessed of a thirst for the exact change of the living.
Built out of 3 sheets of paper and cardboard, measuring 4 and half inches high by 7 inches across, this is one mammoth of a paper model. His arms are fully poseable, and his faceplate slides in and out to change his facial expression - his imposing brow is attached via a tab system so that, once I've built alternate versions, you can change his unibrow to be more or less imposing as you choose. Other customizations are wip!
The next version of him will showcase an actual texture, more humanized hands (yesno?), and maybe even weapons and a pair of stumpy little legs (depending on if I can balance them or not).
If anybody wants to know how to build him, let me know and I'll send you the diagrams on how to build the current edition. :)

That model is pretty cool. :D
The vanship model isn't my own design (I haven't tried designing my own models for 10 years either). It came with the 3rd disc of Last Exile. That one's a funny story, actually. I preordered the disc about 2 months ago. Then, a few weeks ago, I get back into paper modelling again. The week after easter, the disc finally arrives. I open it up to find... a paper model vanship. I was more than a little surprised that such a thing should turn up a week after i get back into paper modelling again for the first time in 10 years. Coincidence? You decide. :)
As for the Homeworld models... they're deceptive. They look like they should be easy, but they actually have some odd shapes on them. I first tried one of the cruisers, but it turned out to be geometrically impossible to build. Next I built the probe (that was rather easy), then I moved onto a few other non-Homeworld models. I'm currently just finishing off a Qwaar-Jet cruiser (just need to glue the guns on). It's turned out to be much better designed than the last one I tried and pretty easy to build. Once that's done, which should only be another hour or so of work, I have a very big model I plan to start. 52 sheets of parts! It'll take me a while but should be good once it's done. :)

The guns are now glued on and the model is done. It came out a bit lop-sided, unfortunately. I think heavier weight paper than 140gsm might be better for these Homeworld ships.
when you get out of 'nappies' you can move onto plasticard. You can get it in varying thicknesses and behaves rather better than card and it doesnt suffer from water damage etc. Some purists get all antsy about it but plasticard is good stuff... its polystyrene sheet, just like 'proper' injection moulded plastic kits and its as stable and modeller friendly as kits are too. Best thing about it is you can use butt joints and use better techniques to fix things etc and you can sand and putty it and paint it and... you get the picture.
I've scratch built with it in the past and its fabbo gear, best bit about it is you can build up ribs and spars for putty or 'bondo' and then carve and shape compound curves which look sexy and are impossible to form from planar stuff like card...
I've even drawn some stuff in Macromedia Freehand and cut it with a laser profiler... for .01mm precision... but its expensive... and best left to those with huge plans and vast ammounts of parts to cut...
well if you insist on using the paper faces, you simply print it on really really thin paper and use spray glue to attach them... the guys who want to go the whole hog paint it on thmeselves.... and its not that hard even for details.. time consuming yes... but not hard

How does one get the images onto this plasticard stuff?
