Kupo!
in Zocalo v2.0
When I logged in just now, it took about ten seconds to get past the login screen, which is unusual, and when it did, all I got was my background; no icons or start menu. I can run programs via Task Manager, and according to that I still do, in fact, have a desktop. :p
Any ideas?

April Fool's Day? Microsoft made a funny hoax once - its name is Windows... ;)
Oh yeah, you wanted some advice? If you have tried reboot and virus scan, I really don't have one... quite interesting problem indeed.

Don't believe everything what Windows tells. :D
A: Defragged
B: formatted your HDD
I now remember that when the same thing happened to me I was messing around with WinXP themes, boot screens and logon screens.

"If it works, don't fix it because it only breaks up."
I think it's time exile was given a "PC expert" title ;)
A: Yes, I do it about once every two weeks
B: A couple months ago

I can answer that question for him, and the answer is...*drum rolls*...YES!

Nah, I don't bother messing with those.
I'm NOT going to reformat, even if it means accessing my PC via the Task Manager for the rest of my life.
I've been told by a few geeks of questionable intelligence that it's caused by Explorer not booting on startup, which makes at least a bit of sense, so I'm going to mess around with crap a bit. :p
does it do this every time you start windows? If so, it sounds like an SOL situation...
tried booting in safe mode?
Try running C:/WINDOWS/explorer.exe from the Task Manager (File>New Task (Run...)). Then, if that gets it going, add explorer.exe to the startup group. You never know, it might work ;)
And yes, I believe it's F8.

Hmm... what's a good online virus scanner?
I think that all those scanning services provided by "bigger" firms should be pretty equal.
If it's virus causing this problem it might show there.
And there is a process with the same name.
What's that name?
Alright, in Safe Mode I have a desktop and all that good stuff, methinketh it is a virus.
I don't. I think it's just a standard windows fuckup. Try creating a new user in safe mode and see if the same thing happens for that user.

You would. Ending the process fixed the problem.
Boot into safe mode and make yourself a new profile.
...problem and found that it was because Windows had corrupted my user profile.
Well, considering Micro$hit's logic that's not problem, it's feature.
(like that case few weeks ago when Wincrash just decided to throw away couple folders when browsing them)
I've had HHD failures, a virus that killed all windows startup files, overclocked my CPU to far which (For some reason) seemed to corrupt windows install when I had to reset bios...
all kinds of fun stuff...
but never a corrupt user profile. :D
but never a corrupt user profile. :D
What about corrupt user? :p
I think Windows sometimes thinks that and gives error messages intentionally.

Doesn't mean it doesn't happen. :)
