"Babylon 5 was the last of the Babylon stations. There would never be another. It changed the future .. and it changed us. It taught us that we have to create the future .. or others will do it for us. It showed us that we have care for one another, because if we don't, who will? And that true strength sometimes comes from the most unlikely places. Mostly, though, I think it gave us hope .. that there can always be new beginnings .. even for people like us."

• I have to say that I too am not so impressed with the quality, I only watched parts of it so far so I can't make a thorough review. Still beats VHS if you ask me, but quality issues with DVDs are more apparent for me because I watch it on a high-res computer monitor. Anyway, still gonna buy all B5 DVD, for archival purposes

The reason for the lower quality of video for The Gathering than you would normally get on DVD is because the film was not the best quality. They were converting something that was expected to only be seen on TV into a high quality format so now we can see all the bad stuff we missed on TV. In the Beginning had excellent video quality though. And I was watching it on a monitor to.

Remember guys, B5 was shot on Super 16 film (for cost reasons) and naturally has horrible quality when compared to 35mm or other film stocks. Although I haven't seen the DVD yet, I imagine it looks very grainy.

Perhaps it isn't being decoded well by some method of DVD playing?
On what did you first watch it?
If a computer, Software or hardware decoder, and what software and if applicable, hardware?
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
The Gathering does look very grainy. In The Beginning looked as good as many of my other DVDs though.

The video quality of "In the Beginning" was not great. It was much better than broadcast video, but the quality of the scenes varied, as if they were taken from multiple sources.

Still, I'm happy with it.

I mean really!

Everyone expects to have wide screen digital quality?

The version of the film is the best you will ever get. Has nothing to do with the DVD. In regards to In the Beginning, the quality of some things from scene to scene depend on the editing and or effects.

You guys probably never caught most of it, because many faults get lost to NTSC displays.

Now that everyone is headed for High Definition, old things are going to look worse, and new things will have to be thought out well to look great.

I'd buy the DVD to simply not have to worry about my tapes degrading, and, as someone esle pointed out, to have it at all.

I'm really hoping they put Third Space, River of Souls, and A Call to Arms on DVD as well, in addition to the seasonal episodes.

Yeah,ITB was grainy...but I got it on DVD now that what's count

Amen, i don't care if its HD, i just want them on DVD, so it will look the same the 1000th time as the 1st time. (and cause DVD's take up a lot less shelf space.)

• Watching ItB as I type.....

This DVD is good enough for me....You have to remember that this was a "test" DVD to tell what the market is like. I'll probably will buy another DVD for a friend regardless of the quality.

I'll do what it takes to get the rest of the series on these little discs of joy.....

Yeah...most, if not all of the problems with the video are due to the original source material.

When looking at the rushes from our two shoots, which were shot on Beta SP, flaws in the set, lighting flaws, flaws in makeup - everything shows up. It was obvious that we were going to have to do some post magic and rely on the fact that the video would be relatively small and compressed to hell for the sim to achieve an acceptable look.

Not only that - their set was b-r-i-g-h-t, sound-wise. Can you say echo? There was a need to do some post magic in the sound mix too.

Nearly all of the visual problems would have been completely invisible in broadcast TV, and probably would have been invisible in a PC game without too much trouble.

But the sound – I was surprised by that.

It doesn't surprise me. It was an old warehouse converted with a low budget, after all.

Someone with video experience just posted on the moderated B5 newsgroup a link to an explanation for the poor transfer to DVD:

• All of you are on crack. The DVD is fine! Yeah, its not Star Wars Episode 1 quality, but your all fools if you expected that, especially from The Gathering.

Its nice to have B5 on a permanent medium like DVD rather than the die in 5 years tapes.

I finally got around to watching the DVD last night, I have no problem with the transfer, its fine,

And plus we now get it on DVD, where we can pause it and notice all the things in the background
****** SPOILERS *******

Not really, but anyway. I finally got to see on Lyta's Identicard the words in the upper left hand corner "Elvis Still Loves You" and "Zooty" i dunno if rebo was there.

And when the Minbari Assasin shows up to meet Del Varner, you can actually SEE the name on the panel when it scans his handprint.

I love DVD
