Save Bob Edwards!

David of MacDavid of Mac Elite RangerCa
Given the law of averages, I'm figuring that at least one of you lot listens to NPR in general, and Morning Edition in particular.

As such, you may have heard that host Bob Edwards have been unceremoniously "promoted" to the status of "Senior Corispondant", the metaphorical pasture public radio hosts are put out to.

If you haven't heard about this, you can stop reading while you howl, "Why, God? Why!?" I'll wait.

Now, ordinarily, I wouldn't put too much stock in this. Bob's been hosting that show for almost a quarter of a century, and if he wants to retire, than by God I'll let him take his gold watch and go home.

(Speaking of Bob's wants, you might get an idea of what they are by listening to the interview here, under "Mourning Edition")

He doesn't seem to want to retire, though. He seems to be being forced out, ostensibly, it's to make the network "better". Be warned, enough corporate buzzwords to choke a horse are in that link. An alternate perspective is here

Now, I call to you, help me in this nobel quest. Help me Save Bob Edwards. Given the realities of the morning commute, he's likely the NPR personality I hear the most, and by God, I'm not letting him or the sane, impartial journalistic style he represents go without a fight. If I want something flashy, I'll watch Channel Seven News, home of Rick-fricking-Sanchez, the man who coined the phrase "If it bleeds, it leads".

And just so this is vaguely on topic for a Babylon 5 website, I'll include a quote that I think sums up my current state of mind perfectly.

"Dammit, Captain, I'm going down there and I'm gonna stop this."

"Now, Michael, you can't do that."

"Yeah? Watch me. It took me three years to put together this team the way I wanted it. Three years. Now these guys come in from the outside and start throwing my people off because they're not Nightwatch? Like hell. I'll quit first."

"You don't mean that."

"No?"

"No! I need you right where you are. If you go in there guns blazing you're just gonna give them the reason they need to push you out. Now without that I can fight to keep you in."

"I won't put on that armband."

"You won't have to. There are other ways of dealing with this. I don't know what they are, but we'll find them."

"All right, fine, you look for them. Me? I'm going down there. And maybe I'll bust some heads and maybe they'll bust mine, but nobody sells out my people like this. Nobody."
