NASA is testing a Mach 10+ AIR BREATHING craft LIVE.
they show it every few minues...they are pushing mach seven as I type!
*Runs off for linkage*

discussion from Trillian with friend:
CW: How many mach is the speed of light?
A2597: ummm...hang on..
A2597: I'm guessing about 100000
CW: wow :)
CW: quite the way away still from getting to intergalactic travel :)
A2597: 299,792,458 m/s
A2597: thats 186322.2 miles a second
A2597: or 670,759,200 miles per hour
A2597: so, 600 mph = mach 1
A2597: so the speed of light is 1117932 x as fast as mach one.
A2597: or 134151.84 times as fast as this plane can travel

they haven't launched yet, the target speed is mach 7
correction...they JUST launched..and it was a success! Mach 7, AWAY!
I refuse to install realplayer.
As do I *cough*

you rock!!! Thank you so much!
pretty cools stuff that! tho i was a little disappointed when the Fox commentator's first comments on the potential of the scramjet was for a new improved cruise missle/new improved way to kill each other:rolleyes:
sad, but true. Easier to mount a scram jet on a nuke then on a mannable aircraft.
the kind the military gets quiet about....leaves a nice donut on a rope trail behind it...
I wonder how fast that thing is... :D

Worf showed it to me, but glad to pass it on :)

And thanks Phi. :) Glad to get rid of Real.
they talked about how you could go from newyork to tokyo in 2 hours at mach 10.
riiiiight...really, prolly more like 3 hours.
I doubt the human body can withstand going from 400 to mach ten in 15 seconds like that thing did....
you Yanks are a bit slow on the uptake arent you...
an Aussie team successfully launched and fired up a SCRAM jet way way back in early last year at Woomera rocket range, up until that point NASA wasnt that interested.. :P
but this was our home team, forgive us for being happy.

It's scramjet.
(supersonic combustion ramjet)
It has one minus: It starts working only after mach 5.

One application of scramjet engine would be this:

There's a show here in the United States called "Tactical to Practical" that airs on the History Channel. You can find it here . It's a show that goes into detail about the research and development of items we use that were first created by the military. Pretty neat stuff. :)

Huh? They very much were interested! In fact, they were originally planning on carrying out this test way back in 2001, but didn't because of a failure of the booster rocket (note that the booster rocket is not the scramjet aircraft). The test in Australia featured a scramjet mounted on the front of a rocket, not a free-flying aircraft with only a scramjet engine. It was also falling towards the ground rather than climbing under its own power, as I recall, so this is at least as much an advance as that test, moreso because the craft flew under its own (scramjet provided) power.

NEVER!
as to tactical to practical...awesome show. I did learn some things on that one, though it works both ways. Practical to Tactical. :D
