would guess that everyone who had been in that room at that time was under a lot of stress with that news, and that the vet made a slip of the tongue or you misheard him or a combination of both.
Alternatively, you could be living in a country that has been so overrun by lawyers that he doesn't want a malpractice suit if he goes ahead and it doesn't work. However, last time I checked, the UK hadn't got as bad as the US.
Its a bad, bad slip of the tongue, Biggles. I know it is easy to get confused but I had a conversation with the man after he'd said it. Infact he said it 2x in different ways meaning the same thing.
And no the UK isn't like the US in that way. Though I do think that cos I was questioning him on phone that perhaps he felt abit pressured somewhat. But you cannot ask these things when its a life.

D'you know what "choke the chicken means?" lol!
Actually I'm surprised that you have heard of the expression. As I thought it was a "Brummie" saying. The Midlands in UK.
:) I hadn't heard of it in Devon til a few yrs ago.

It's not as bad as you think it is. :) The media (any form of it) make it seem like it is a lot.

Yea. Definitely worth the money. Hell, even I'd prolly pay for my pets operation.
On myself.. it's another matter. I'd take the money and use it for living. Live fast. Die young. heh
Who knows. If I come out alive from Thailand, and get cancer/tumor (grandpa died of it, aunt and uncle and grandma had it but got it "fixed"), I'll prolly work for a while and save. And then go to japan, get a katana and go berserk. Or maybe USA... :P
