I like clocks.
in Zocalo v2.0
Yes, it's now been confirmed that Rochester does, in fact, suck extreme amounts of ass. And I do not mean donkeys, nor through means of a straw.
It's dark.
It's gloomy.
It's cold.
It's grey.
It's brick.
There's no life here. And, there's nothing to do. If I leave the safety of the apartment, I'll eventually freeze to death. If I stay, I'll die of boredom (a.k.a. heart attack from too much delivery food).
Were I not going to school here, I would never, EVER live here outside of the late spring, summer, and *maybe* the early fall. It's just got this massive aura of depression. I came back from my vacation, cheery and otherwise happy, only to be struck down with the most extreme form of blandness. And, of course, the moment I did leave on break, blue skies were finally appearing and the snow that had accumulated over the past TEN WEEKS had begun melting. Of course, that has all stopped now, as the new white crud has begun reinforcing the melting piles. I find it amusing, though, that "piles" of snow here can most easily stand taller than the buildings adjacent them.
Right as I return, what happens? The skies turn dark, and the gods release their time-delay rage upon the poor inhabitants of this city.
Better yet, since my car is out of the picture for almost a month, I'm stuck here. I'm bound to this damned campus for the next few weeks, with my only means of escape 400 miles away.
I hate this place. hate hate hate.
Just venting. Only ten weeks. Ten more weeks, and I'm out. Summer. Freedom, for a few weeks. But, freedom from this horrible place, and next year, I'll be far off campus if things go well. Away from this boring, dull, bland, annoying, stupid, backwards, ugly place, returning only for classes. Though, in all honesty, it's not that bad when the weather's not god awful.

Dunno what you complaining there. Sounds like heaven imho.
Maybe not the cold part but there's ways around it. And I've lived nigh 21 years in finland. Gotten pretty used to the cold.

And sounds also pretty much like Finland at winter.
Boo for being cramped in.
Hehe...guess I shouldn't talk about the nice sunny (no clouds any where) 60-75 degree weather we had today (and looks like for the rest of the week too)? :)
Actually it's here also very sunny now and temperature is near 0 celsius.
Only minus is that sunglasses aren't "optional".
There's blinding bright outside and even if here isn't blinding bright it's better use those because snow also reflects UV-radiation very efficiently. (which doesn't do any good to eyes)
Sanfam I take it thats Rochester New York?
It does get cold here, about -5 degrees c.
That's not cold, that's warm.
If you would live few weeks somewhere where temperature goes under -20 celsius you would consider -5 celsius as warm weather.
Here in Southampton we've had snow falls twice in the past 2 months, which is very unusual. It does get cold here, about -5 degrees c. Back home in Ireland though, being in the middle of the country it can get down to -10. But all in all we're quite warm down here in the south of england.
You're in Southampton? I know someone there! I've heard all about the 2 snow falls. :D
hehe, my uni is in the center of the city. To bad its an hour commute for me :(
Yeah its nice here at PSU isnt it? all the entertainment stuff is near bye, two different major movie theaters, several smaller independents, resteraunts, bars, shopping.
And thats within 10 blocks! ;)

I suggest strongly that those who live high latitudes should look outside when there's dark.
1½ hour ago whole northern sky was pretty bright because of auroras.
Today was hell. The sky was clear and sun shining like hell.. It was horrible. Disgusting.
So true. I had to stay inside all day because of it.
hehe, my uni is in the center of the city. To bad its an hour commute for me :(
its a half-hour walk for me to the uni. doesnt sound so bad, but when u have to get up for it with after a heavy night out its not so good:D
So true. I had to stay inside all day because of it.
You're not a vampire are you?! ;)
Expecting possible dusting of snow. Prolly not in Devon though. Maybe Dartmoor in next couple days.
As for Auroras I saw one in Devon yrs ago which was very unusual. Usually only see them up north like Scotland.
Biggles... you do? Freaky! What part of Southampton is he/she in? Small world eh! :)

I've been up here in Scotland for about 10 years now (which is 10 years too many IMHO:p), and ive yet to see an aurora:rolleyes:
ET... figured one of you scandinavians would mention your version of cold! ;) Didn't one of you post something last year describing how those in Finland measure cold?? Something like -15 Fins have their last bbq... bloody funny list! :D

You mean this one? :)
How the Finns deal with temperatures
+15°C / 59°F This is as warm as it gets in Finland, so we'll start here. People in Spain wear winter-coats and gloves. The Finns are out in the sun, getting a tan.
+10°C / 50°F The French are trying in vain to start their central heating. The Finns plant flowers in their gardens.
+5°C / 41°F Italian cars won't start, The Finns are cruising in cabriolets.
0°C / 32°F Distilled water freezes. The water in Vantaa river (in Finland) gets a little thicker.
-5°C / 23°F People in California almost freeze to death. The Finns have their final barbecue before winter.
-10°C / 14°F The Brits start the heat in their houses. The Finns start using long sleeves.
-20°C / -4°F The Aussies flee from Mallorca. The Finns end their Midsummer celebrations. Autumn is here.
-30°C / -22°F People in Greece die from the cold and disappear from the face of the earth. The Finns start drying their laundry indoors.
-40°C / -40°F Paris start cracking in the cold. The Finns stand in line at the hotdog stands.
-50°C / -58°F Polar bears start evacuating the North Pole. The Finnish army postpones their winter survival training awaiting real winter weather.
-60°C / -76°F Korvatunturi (the home for Santa Claus) freezes. The Finns rent a movie and stay indoors.
-70°C / -94°F The false Santa moves south. The Finns get frustrated since they can't store their Kossu (Koskenkorva vodka) outdoors. The Finnish army goes out on winter survival training.
-183°C / -297.4°F Microbes in food don't survive. The Finnish cows complain that the farmers' hands are cold.
-273°C / -459.4°F ALL atom-based movent halts. The Finns start saying "Perkele, it's cold outside today."
-300°C / -508°F Hell freezes over, Finland wins the Eurovision Song Contest.
The mexicans keep telling me I'm crazy when I say it's warm, nice weather at 12-15C :D
Yeah, that's perfect weather for t-shirt and shorts. (except if there's northern wind)
Little same kind thing is that when one worker of local electronics repairshop was in Mallorca. Seawater temperature was 25 celsius so locals "little" wondered why he went to swim saying that it's cold there.
Even 22 celsius is pretty good achievement in Finland, but 25, that's damn warm, you can swim for hours in that warm water.
Last July we went to cottage of one relative in nort-Karelie. Water temperature had been about 20 celsius at midday, when we arrived late afternoon water temperature had dropped to around 15 celsius because northern wind had rised colder water from bottom.
When there's cold in winter it always feels like fingers are freezing about 15 to 20 minutes, after that fingers start warming so that after half hour they don't feel cold anymore. (same with toes)
So cold isn't so big problem if you're doing something.
But if you're standing or sitting in one spot, you'll have to have so much clothes on that you can't move well. (especially you must have so many gloves on hands that you couldn't do anything with them)
Park Ave. - bars/restaurants/coffee shops...
Monroe Ave. - same as above
Frontier Field/Blue Cross Arena - sports (baseball, hockey, soccer, lacrosse)
Marketplace Mall / Greece Ridge Center / Eastview Mall - shopping by the boat load
Hylan Dr. - close to RIT, MANY restaurants/retail stores
GEVA Theatre - great live plays/musicals
Rochester Auditorium / Eastman Theatre - music, concerts...
DINOSAUR BBQ - BEST BBQ RESTAURANT EVER
Many parks (Genesee / Mendon / Eastman )
Milennium games -> card/role playing game HQ (if you go for that stuff)
need I go on...?
SO you see Rochester isnt such a bad place to live, EXPECT THE WEATHER, dont nag about it... if you want "warm" weather go to arizona or florida..
there ive said my bit :)
Biggles... you do? Freaky! What part of Southampton is he/she in? Small world eh! :)
I haven't a clue. :)

You need to get Sanfam out of the house a bit then, before he goes crazy and blows something up.
