Video editing software

CurZCurZ Resident Hippy
I need to make sort of a collage of different pieces of various movie files I have. More in detail, I need to be able to capture pieces of video files (with sound) encoded with divx and xvid, patch them together in a certain order into one continuous stream. I also need to be able to add my own sound track(s) to it.

Anyone know if there's one single piece of software that can do that? If not, what do I need?

I'm fairly sure virtual dub will do what you want.

Biggles: Virtual Dub isn't recognizing the MPEG2 files written by my TV Tuner software - any idea why?

    From the VirtualDub homepage:
VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.
So in other words, it can't read mpeg2 format files. It's designed for codecs that use the avi file format, which means things like divx, xvid, etc. Try TMPGEnc for mpeg2.

O..kay. I ran virtualdub once, and now I don't get any sound when playing video files anymore. Tried reinstalling the codecs, but nothing seems to work.

When playing the video files you made or when playing any?

Any at all, with any codec.

Weird. I've never encountered that problem.

Since you only need it once, the 30 day trial of Adobe Premiere should work. :)
