Cat Probs

Took my cat to the vets today because he's been having trouble with his teeth. Vet said it could be to do with the immune system for which he'll have to have blood tests Tuesday to find out. If not then they'll clean his teeth under anesthetic as they will assume this is the cause of herpes. But that it could still return. Just wondering if anyone since a few of you have cats, if you have any advice or info on any of the above. Am thinking if its the immune system then nothing can be done. :(

My advice? Do whatever the vet says, they know what they're talking about, and don't consider anything "too expensive." Well, unless you actually can't afford it, I guess.

Yeah just sometimes ppl who've had the same probs can give good advice too.
Well is costing around £80! But its worth the money. Cept that its no guarentee as the vet said.
But you're right in they do know what they are doing. :)

Biggles speaks the truth. Vets = Cat Gods. What they say should be followed!

And treatment can be expensive, yeah, but I'd sell off my computer if it meant keeping my kitty healthy.
• MartianDustMartianDust Elite Ranger
Awww Sanfam that is so lovely!! :) Wow, there's not many ppl like you around. Very impressed I must say!

Well am not looking forward to Tuesday thats for sure. Worse Mon night with Jasper not having no food. Is worse than humans in this respect cos you can't explain to them and I know he's going to be pandering BIG time! I'll have to stay in my room cos I don't think he'll automatically think food then!

Oh yeah and vets I think they treat animals better than Dr.s treat humans.
:)

All our cats have been expensive in some way, and my parents have never even considered not paying except in one case where the vet actually said that it wasn't worth the money because the poor kitten would have a terrible life (she had a brain parasite that caused epilepsy - seeing her have a fit was one of the most painful things I have ever seen, she was just a few months old and so frightened). Of our current two cats, one likes to eat a kind of barbed grass that gets stuck in her throat requiring being aneasthetised to remove, and the other has a kidney disorder that required a lot of very expensive work at first and now requires a constant special and very expensive diet to ensure the symptoms don't return.
• MartianDustMartianDust Elite Ranger
Aww sorry to hear that Biggles. :( I can imagine that being terrible with the kitten.
The one that eats barbed grass I not heard of that before.

I had a lovely cat with kidney probs so I can sympathsize with you there. The vet just told me to feed it real cooked meat like chicken nothing about expensive diets and I wonder sometimes whether a diet like the vet has given you, would've been better? The diet mine was on just slowed the inevitable process. Am glad yours even though expensive is on a diet that seems to be working. That is good. :)
How old are your cats? Mine is about 12. My last one with the kidney prob was 12.
I just wonder if alot of cats get probs around this age?

This cat is about 3 or 4 now. He had cat flu when he was a kitten, which damaged his nose so now he can't smell food as well and so won't eat it unless you shake the plate so the biscuits rattle. The vet thinks the cat flu may have caused the kidney problems as well.

Our previous cat lived to be 17 and she never had any kidney problems at all.

What's interesting is that I honestly don't know how old my cats are anymore. They've just been with me so long now that they're just...there. Annibelle and Bobo. Annie's lucky, though, as she's the only of three to survive her kittenhood. Her brother (Spunky) and sister (Ginger) were both rather short lived, though Ginger lived almost an entire year over her brother, but ran away after surgery from getting hit by a car. While the whole process was expensive for us, had she not been able to escape, I think it would all have been quite worth it (Would have been able to use her hind legs).

My only advice about cats, is to not TELL them you are taking them to the vet to have their balls cut off, they tend to try and scratch your eyes out...

I swear our cats have learnt to recognise the word "vet" and dissapear for around 6 hours as soon as they hear it.

Cats are the best kind of people. Obey them.

My father is allergic to them, so Ive never had any, but Im catching up on all that lost time with my gfs cats. They are great :)
(especially the one that cant figure out if he likes me or hates me)

Id say go with Biggles advice..

Ok well firstly Jaspers ok now! *relief* I was worried this morning as the blood test was to check for Aids and Leukemia. So I was hoping the phone wasn't going to ring! He's had 4 teeth out due to one being infected that infected them all! His left front fang and the rest on the left. They were nearly falling out already!
He was starving when he came home but had to wait and gave him chicken and bit of fish later. So nice to give him food again!! He stayed in the kitchen I think all nite last nite. But he's been full of beans and not slept since! He wanted to go out so I rang the vet to check and it was ok if I went out with him lol! Do they think I'm going to jump over fences and walls too? ;) Well this went on 3 times going out, food, going out etc...with him (not the jumping part) and decided to let him go out alone and he wasn't long but he's still not sleepy yet! I think they gave him something else!! Been really hyper.
Anyway have to check him in next wk and get results from a Biopsy so hopefully not anything serious in the mouth going on!
:)

2nd post coming up..............

I think Jaspers lost half his senses! Am always having to point and rattle his food.
:) I think 17 is a long age not sure. Am sure someone said that their cat lived to 33?! Aren't they supposed to outlive dogs?
Sanfam am sorry to hear you cat ran away. Must've been all the shock. :(

Are you talking from experience then?! lol ;) My cat definitely knew something was up since last nite! I think mines Pyschic so I don't think avoiding the word "Vet" will do much.

Thanks Messiah well as you know I did but god the cost of it all doubled! Cost £177 in all! Cost £50 with the Biopsy alone. Funny cos its only about £1 for a tooth to be taken out!

That's not bad... I paid $400+ to give my cat a sex change.

He had urniary track problems, and the only way to cure it was to... re-route him.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
That was (and still is) the alternative solution to my cat's problems. The kidney stuff basically results in a blocked urinary tract. If he gets bad again, then we have to take that option.

we just lost one of our kittens, well, one of the kittens that we'd given away,

he was the runt of the litter, cute lil thing, and i thought he was just small, but aparently he was born without a diaphragm and was missng several ribs, The new owners took him to the vet, and the vet said that it would be about $5,000 for the surgury, so they said they couldn't afford it and were jsut going to have it put to sleep, but the vet offered to donate the surgury, unfortunatley the kitten died the night before the surgury :(
• My cats are both runts... 6 years old now, and maybe half the size of a full-grown cat. I don't like large cats.

Thats a great vet, caring for his patients. Sorry he didnt have time. Being born without diaphragm is a serious thing indeed, youd have nothing to separate your lungs, heart and abdominal regions. You wouldnt be able to cough or sneese. Poor thing :(

Well, i happen to like Maine Coon Cats, which are generally large cats, However, I used to own a purebreat Shaded Silver maine Coon (i had to give her away when we moved 5 years ago) and she was a small cat, very rare for a Coon.

well, all i know is that while we had it, it seemed fairly healty albiet a little thin, it played with the others, purred a lot, was eating fine.

The vet definately rocked for even offering to donate the surgury. but obviously it wasn't ment to live, and im' glad it didn't have to go through the pain and discomfort of surgury and die anyway.
• MartianDustMartianDust Elite Ranger
Aww I'm sorry to hear that. :(
That was more than decent of the vet.

I've never had any kittens yet. Lol that could mean something else!
Anyway when I lost my first after being run over, I got my next from the RSPCA. He'd been dumped by his owners in a bin liner and the woman warned me he would die as he was so unhappy so of course I had to have him and he was lovely. This might sound really daft but I swear he was like a soul mate at that time but his soul was trapped in a cat instead of human hehe. :)
After I lost him due to kidney failure, another cat kept coming round so i took him in eventually! He (Jasper) wasn't mistreated but his owners weren't bothered and the funny thing is.....they took on another cat that Jasper apparently introduced to them cos he didn't have a good home. So they kinda did a moving house thing! Talk about a smart cat. :)

Not quite the right thread to post this...but it's the closest one. I was home for the weekend and my dog's arthritis has gotten much worse :( She barely got up to greet me... Here's hoping the test results come back ok so we can get her some stronger (and more expensive of course...) medicine so she can go back to chasing frisbees. :)

I hope Pickle gets the medicine she needs, I wouldn't want anything to happen to her.
