    I read about this a few days ago. It was either a 3 or 4 inch scope, if I recall correctly.

    3 inch (76mm) telescope.
    But there's no info about is it reflector or refractor.
    I guess it could be refractor, there's lot of damn nice pics in Astronomy magazine which have been taken with refractors

    M42 is one the best objects to start.
    With greater magnification trapezoid is also visible.
    M27 is also very good object

    M1 is of course classical supernova remnant.

    BTW, Where do you live so I could tell which objects are visible there, some of my favorite objects propably don't show well in southern hemisphere.
