SPOILERS~ Great machine vs. THE EYE

Those of you that have read book number 3 of the Technomages..can answer..those that haven't well, this is a spoiler thread so turn back now! lol

What is the difference between the great machine and the eye? I didn't see any EXCEPT that the eye alters the person. what about you?

    The Great Machine could be one of two things, in my opinion. It could be a smaller version of The Eye, or it could be the Vorlons' version of it (Vorlons or another ancient race).
    The race that took care of the machine could not have made it themselves (I'm talking about the original keeper of it, not Zathri).

    As for the differences, I don't think The Eye had the power that The Great Machine had. I seriously doubt it could open time portals, for example. The Eye is simply a Central Processor of the Shadow empire, that needs to be powered by a living being.

    What surprises me is that the Shadows never attempted to capture The Great Machine, aside from (and this is a maybe) sending the renegade aliens to capture it for them. This supports the theory that it was indeed a device built by one of the other Ancient races that Shadows did not want to upset.

    I think the Great Machine is simply a nice nod by JMS to older Science Fiction like Forbidden Planet...
