indeed. i have actually heard of them before, but never in any detail so it was interesting reading. (have to admit tho that i did get rather sidetracked reading about the history of the Soviet Union:))

Yeah me too. I'd heard about them but never seen anything on them. I didn't know NASA had good pages about Soviet space missions. The ones about Venus were quite interesting.

At least one of those lunakhods/or "mothershipp" also returned samples to earth.
If I remember right amount was about few hundred grams.

I vaguely remember the probes to Venus.

I remember things like it had a Diamond Lens for the camera, and it took some photos of the nearby ground (I have a picture of that somewhere), and that it lasted something like 20 minutes before the pressure and caustic environment crushed some vital component and took it out of action.

I think all of the probes that have landed on Venus have lasted a small number of minutes before the heat melted them or some vital part of them.

Longest time is little over two hours:

Environment is pretty hostile: pressure 100 bars and temperature 450-500 celsius.
Pressure itself isn't biggest problem, landers can be tested in pressure chambers and made to withstand it but it's impossible to protect electronics from that heat for long time.

Heat? Let the aerogel loose :D

It's such a wonderful substance with its near 100% thermal insulation

So you think transmitter could also be insulated?

That is one hell of an interesting page. :)

Anyone know how to move a planet out into a further orbit from the sun?

:p
• PJHPJH The Lovely Thing
Just construct a hell of a big fridge with a hell of a long power cable from Earth and put the planet in. :p

Actually, yes. Not completely covered, but apparently, Aerogel can be used to insulate such equipment quite effectively. If I remember to, I'll dig up the page explaining that a bit later tonight.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Sounds damn handy. :) Pity they won't consider another trip to Venus any time soon.

Oh, and if anyone needs another brilliant example of one of the side benefits of the space program, here's yet another spin off to improve your life. Aerogel sounds ideal for insulation in all sorts of places, even homes.
• What's a bucket of Aerogel cost, these days? :p
• I han't heard about the moon landers, though it makes sence.

Unfortunetally, right after I mention it my older sister commented on how Russia won the space race, because we faked the moon landings...Gah...stupid stupid stupid!

Well, my guess is that she has watched Capricorn One too many times.
• Everyone knows a Neo-Fascist group trying to revive Hitler's dream created the landing tapes, in the hopes of inciting a Communist-Capitalist war, so that they could take the world while the two fought. Duh.
