Puters eating environment?!

This will probably sound mishy mashy but I heard from a friend from a friend that a prog last wk was on about Computers being bad for the planet and that in the yr 2098 everything and I mean everything would be gone! Apparently something is eating everything that comes from puters??! Any truth or ideas in this. I don't know what the technical term is called, I never saw this prog and can't really look it up without any names to look for. But since alot of you are "NUTTY PROFESSORS" ;) you must have heard/read something.

I can't believe there's yet something else destroying this planet. I want to look for a new home now. ;)

Over and out.........

Perhaps they are referring to nanotech, and the fears of someone nasty and/or stupid creating a perfect self replicating nano-bot?
• BekennBekenn Sinclair's Duck
Maybe it'll be of the WC4 variety!
• MartianDustMartianDust Elite Ranger
Don't think it was nanotech!

Whats WC4?

I'll have to find out more. Think the prog was Horizon and they may have website, but I'll look tomorrow now. Or I should say later today!

Wing Commander 4, one of the better space-combat flight sims out there. I was referencing a plot point; I'll not say more outside of a spoiler tag.

Was it this ? Looks interesting...organic nanotechnology. But don't worry too much, it's mostly still theoretical. There's still a big difference between a transistor and a functioning nanobot :)

I believe that it was the fact that everything was being saved to Compact discs, old discs with organic material can be eaten up by bacteria. They fixed it.

anyone here read any of ben bova's novels. in moonwar and moonrise in particular he deals with this subject, predicting 'nanoludites' who stand in the way of progress by destroying anything connected with nano-tech and making it illegal. that is presonally what i fear. afterall, 'we' already have weapons that cause far more damage and are more dangerous.
• Michael Crichton's Prey was fairly interesting, as well. :)

havent read that one. whats the plot line?

Phi thanks for link, this was the programme. Was just going to cut and paste the link before I saw yours. Still scarey stuff though if its not put to good use! :)

Isn't there a film called that? This on PC only?
:)
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
The Wing Commander movie was "based" on the games.

Gonna have to watch that again...

I have that DVD, and I didn't think it was that bad...

Aye, there was the movie; I saw it when it came out in theaters, but never bothered to pick up the DVD. I did pick up the soundtrack, though; Sanfam's absolutely right about that.

Quite frankly, WC4 works far better as a movie than the WC movie does. They should've just pulled all the cut scenes from the game and added in some CGI, had the actors come back to do some voice work, and slapped it up on the screen. It would've been much better.

I'll look out for the film. :)

I saw Final Fantasy animation last nite. Loved the effects, truely incredible! This good as a game?
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
The Final Fantasy movie is based on the games only in that it's written by the same guy and has the same name. Apart from that, you can't compare them. For a start, the guy who wrote it is extremely good at telling great stories, but not in the space of 2 hours.

I rather liked the FF movie....

But, yeah, it's not something that'll give you any indication of what the games are like or about. This particularly since no two FF games occupy the same universe, not counting X-2.

havent read that one. whats the plot line?
I don't know how to prevent it from sounding like a cheesy movie you might see on Skiffy... logically, it should be, but somehow Crichton saves it. It's about a nanotech "swarm" that's invented, made partially of nanobots and partially of a strain of E.coli bacteria that uses biological life (ie. dead stuff) to replicate, and enlarge the swarm. The swarms start out weak, unable to stay up in the wind or do much of anything, but slowly grow smarter, learning how to take the shape of a Human, move in the wind, kill people, etc... :)

As did I, otherwise I wouldn't own the DVD. :)

The only way to really see what the games are like is to play at least 2 of them. 6 and 10 would be good ones to try to get both ends of the spectrum.
• MartianDustMartianDust Elite Ranger
I'm all confused!

You mean there's like 10 chapters of FF? Or you actually mean no two games are ever alike?!
In the movie there was 8 spirits to find, is there one spirit per game?

:)
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
There are 12 Final Fantasy games, plus another (FF12) currently nearing completion. They are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, X, 11 and X-2 (a sequel to X). Ignore X-2 now, it's not relevant to the remainder of this post.
Each game is entirely separate from the others. Each has a complete and self-contained story with a beginning, middle and end. Each takes place in its own unique world, with its own characters. They all have their own little differences in game mechanics (or in the case of 8, huge differences which unfortunately made it into a bad game with a great story). The same goes for the movie: it's a separate story in a separate world (in this case, Earth - none of the games take place on Earth, or even in our solar system - in fact humanity never even enters into it).

Yes, I def picked up the WingCommander soundtrack "back in the day"...
I actuallly bought the VHS off of eBay way before it was ever released.
I have NEVER played the wing commander video games so I thought the movie wasn't that bad.
I picked up the DVD last year cause it was in the bargan bin for $6 :)
Overall I'm a satisfied wingcommander movie fan
• MartianDustMartianDust Elite Ranger
Biggles thanks for clearing my confusion. :) Wow thats alot of games! I had no idea! I s'pose it doesn't matter which one to get, though you did recommend 6 and 10.
:)
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Yeah, you don't actually need to play one of them to be able to play another and understand it. I would start with 6 because it is the best of all of them. But you'll need either an SNES or an emulator to play it. :)
• BekennBekenn Sinclair's Duck
Aye, 6 is widely regarded as the best.

And it has a great soundtrack. But then, so do all of them. Not counting X-2. Or X. Or XI.

Man, XII better have a good soundtrack again... I think it will, given that Nobuo Uematsu's not delegating any of it out this time.

Which reminds me... anyone know when Xenosaga II's soundtrack will be released? Is it still Yasunori Mitsuda (please please please), or has he moved on to other things?
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
I quite like X's soundtrack in many places.

I'm not sure what you mean by Xenosaga II's sound track... the game itself is still a while away from release, isn't it?
• BekennBekenn Sinclair's Duck
This year in Japan, supposedly.

Xenosaga I's soundtrack came out in March the year of or before release; if it was the same year, then the came came out towards the December end.
