Argone Memorial

in Zocalo v2.0
It's approaching that time again...
Originally, the Memorial project was put aside so that the family could grieve, and then never picked up again. But with the anniversary of George's death coming up in 18 days, I think it would be an opportune time to remind his family that they are not alone in their sorrow...
The essence of the project would be to submit anything you thought appropriate, as a memorial to our good friend. Any and all submissions would be acceptable, provided you can get them to whoever will be compiling it all. I assume this would be Sanfam, as he lives fairly close by, but I won't presume that much without his confirmation.
The important thing for now, is knowing how many people are interested. It'd be ideal if we could give the Kunichs something to remind them that George had dozens of friends across the globe that bitterly miss him, but no one is expected to submit anything. Only encouraged...
Thoughts?

So... 17 days left. We need to organize, figure out what we are going to do, and then do it. I brought the topic up, but I don't have a whole lot of resources at my disposal. Ideas?
Oh, and a little research on Klingons got me this:
Klingon death ritual
A ceremony practiced upon the death of a comrade. The eyes of the fallen warrior are pried open, while other warriors gather around and let loose with a powerful howl that has been described not as a wail of the dead, but as an exhaltation of the victorious. Klingon belief holds that the howl is a warning for the dead to beware because a Klingon warrior is about to arrive.

Let's go for it! ;)
What sucks is I could easily make one, but the likliehood of it getting through the shipping channels is highly remote at best...
...and it would be expensive.
That said... if there is some support I would be happy to make one.

I've been looking for some design docs to help you out, but so far without much success. You can probably eyeball it, anyway.

I do not know how much support I can offer monetarily, but I think that is a very good idea.
What might be best, and would mean the most, is some kind words from his friends here, and send them to his family.
That was what I had in mind as well, but we've got quite a few artists here, who will likely want to honor Argone in their own way.

Ok, then we can do both? My suggestion would make it easiest on everyone because it would only cost you a couple minutes of their time to write up something. Maybe a couple of dollars at the most to mail a card.

...cost isn't an issue here.
It would be a useable and quite deadly weapon, not just a wall hanger. I'd find making a 'fake' like this for Argone, even pothumusly, highly insulting to his honour. It is a true warriors weapon or it is nothing...
I'll look into the customs issues. I may not be able to ship it with a functional edge. If thats the case I'll need to have a trusted custodian at the other end who can arrange the cutting of the edge.
I'll look into the costs, but, at a guesstimate, I'd say we'd be looking at $200 AUD for materials, plus my time(some of which I'll donate but I wont absorb the whole lot by any means), plus shipping,(another guess of about $150 AUD)
So as a base point... $300 USD
As a personal note, I think this would have the most meaning if it were actually created by one of us rather than simply being bought, but I also think it works either way, so long as it's not chintzy.
And I'm glad no-one directly associated the word 'chintzy' with me or the work I do... I'd hate to have to execute a fellow Firstone...:)
Those Pakistani blades are cheap nasty things, more an insult than an honour, if the recipient knows anything about blades.
My suggestion is that Sanfam is your point of contact. Paypal to him whatever funds you want to put into this project and he can send me a lump sum. I get nailed badly by my bank when I want to transfer funds out of paypal, so its better than I do it once rather than half a dozen times.
...cost isn't an issue here.
You mis-understand. I was thinking more along the lines of making easier for everyone to do rather than the cost side of it.
assuming we get good subscription from our more liquid members I think we could safely set a figure of $20 USD.
That makes the sum worthwhile to shift across all the financial channels.
Having said that its upto you guys, whatever you can spare.
Also, if I get the work cut from a full sheet of 5mm mild steel I could perhaps make quite a few. A full sheet of steel is 4x8 feet... thats alot of bat'leths..:) I could easily ship blanks for those who wanted 'kits' to make thier own.
I would of course finish Argones to the proper standards.
We're also not limited to weapons... any profile you can think of I can cut in steel, (provided it isnt extremely complex). All I need is nice sharp artwork, prefferably as a vector based file, though I can digitize/redraw a pixel based file.
Upto a point its a case of 'more the merrier'
Pay for a sheet of steel = $200
Pay for setup costs = $140
shipping (TBA)
if you split that up amongst 10 it suddenly becomes a very workable figure. Those who do want to kick in for the bat'leth, please use the Firstones paypal channel... and either email Sanfam separately and tell him its for the bat'leth project, or mark the paypal payment as 'for bat'leth project'.
this is gunna be so cool..:)
Hmmm... PayPal isn't an option, no credit card, no bank account (save the college one). I'll scan a $20 and email it to Sanfam.
If you're using photoshop CS, you won't be able to! :D

Hehe. Maybe if you gave me some PS tutorial links. :D
(5 DAYS)
It certainly can. But you'll only be fighting bottlecaps and cans, mighty miniature warrior!
Significantly higher if in check form, I'd wager.
hmm... what're the chances of my parents liking the idea of me sending $20 through the mail to some guy living in NYC, to benefit a fallen war vet somewhere near Buffalo? :)
