The Athlon lives! :D

JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
Well A2597, Bekenn, SB, and everyone else...

The machine is running... A learning experience.

MoBO defaults were CPU speed of 100, so I changed it to 133 to get everything to the "Athlon 1800+ and DDR 266" spec.

Been running it for a while at the BIOS, watching the temp. So far it's maxed only up to 47 degrees C / 116 degrees F

I tried OC earlier, obviously hung at 266, but 166 worked giving the "Athlon 2100+ and DDR 300" spec.

It seemed to run, but I didn't let it for long.

also, as a pleasant suprise, it turns out that the DDR module that came with the iWill MoBo, was a 256 Meg, noty 128!!! Woot!

:D

Getting XP on it is myt next job tomorrow... ;)

Thanks again everyone... so a wonderful group... amidst all the negative of the year 2003.

Be proud firstones!

Well, congratulations for a new PC.

Hopes it works well.

BTW: 166MHz bus speed gives DDR333.;)

Glad it seems to be working!

Any time, Jack. :)

[edit]<-- Oh hey, would you look at that. I never even noticed. :)[/edit]
• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
Well can't run it with the case closed, because there's not enough ventilation. Much noisier though.

Will have to keep an eye out for a newer model case that someone doesn't need anymore, before I can close her up and recess her under the desk.

But, all in all she's working great. Time to get her loaded up with stuff!!

:p
• ...and max out the details on HW2....

BTW, a geforce 3 gives good framerate on Farcry....from lows in the 20s to highs in the 50s ad medium details. (Which look stunning still)

Have fun Jack, and glad we could help! :)

and OCing it to 2100!!! whow...I can't even get my procc to clock above 200mhz normal speed...it stays cool, but crashes. :(
• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
Well, as I said... it ran OC, but I didn't do it for long... :p

I have it at 1800+ and DDR 266 at the moment, and it runs around 44 degrees C with the case closed. so I'll run it there with case open to keep her cool for when I actually do things with it.

:D

Like HW2, LW 7.5, etc...
• Athlons run hotter then Intels, just a FYI. 44* ain't horrible for an Athlon. I mean, RC's runs that hot, mine gets about 45 under load now....so no biggie. :D

just make certain the heatsink is cleaned out once in awhile...
• Random ChaosRandom Chaos Actually Carefully-selected Order in disguise
Yeah - mine runs under load at 51C. Its well within tolerances for an Athelon (max die temp is actually 85C for mine, 90C for yours). But I also have a 3000+ (2.1GHz)...so...it should run hotter then yours given that its higher speed.

And it isn't as if I don't have a lot of good fans on my system. My mobo temp is 28C...so this is all in the heatsink and CPU.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Mine's started running about a degree hotter since I installed some fan filters a couple of days ago because of lower airflow. Now it sits at 30 case/42 CPU.
• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
With the side off, mine runs 40 C / 104 F...

Definately an oven when the side is on...

;)

By the way, does anyone know how to get the temp readings while in XP Pro?

I have to restart and go into the BIOS at the moment.

;)

Thanks!

Mine is running at 49 at the moment.

JackN: Go out an search for a program called "Sandra"
http://www.sisoftware.net/index.html?dir=dload&location=sware_dl_x86&langx=en&a=

In the Motherboard info panel it will give you info on the temperature of the motherboard and CPU temperature probes.

I was thinking about something more along the lines of this HMonitor

smaller system tray item than a 7 1/2 meg download! :p

Athlon XP 2800+ (2.08GHz) running at 43C

:D

Stock heatsink too. This thing is a fucking MONSTER! Was a real bitch to mount too!
• you should get the kind of heatsink Sanfam likes....really nice, and easy.

My Athlon 2600+ OCed 200mhz sits a 41-43, up to 45 under load.

depends on room temp. What I don't understand, is why it gets INSANELY unstable past that speed. it's cool enough, but system is forced to shut down. / reboot.

hold the phone...2800+ runs 2.08ghz? Thats the exact same as a 2600+ mate....you have a barton core or something?

Because temperature isn't the only thing that can make them fail. Transistors are only capable of switching at a certain rate, so you get errors, and other things can also cause problems.
• Random ChaosRandom Chaos Actually Carefully-selected Order in disguise
Yeah...things like quantum tunnelling and such are more likely to occur as temperature goes up - even just a little bit.

Boo-ya! I sit here typing on an AMD K6-2 at 533mhz. Thign has a nice feature where it randomly restarts all the time too. I really have to get around to getting the net at home... I trudged through a foot and a half of snow to surf the net today.

Try bigger latencies for memory/or lower memory bus speed. (if your mobo has memory bus "coefficient")
Increasing processor speed requires increasing FSB because processor makers have locked multiplier. (FSB*multiplier=processor clock speed)

When crossing certain point there's no profit in increasing processor speed if it requires bigger memory latencies because those latencies control how many clock pulses memory uses before it can deliver that data which processor required. (bigger latencies > processor have to wait longer for data from memory)

eh, tried it again after the Athlon was warmed up... very inconsistant. SO I am back to default

1800+ 133 FSB and 266 DDR settings.

Which is just fine by me! ;)

If I want a faster computer I'll buy a faster computer. I can't be bothered with overclocking. :)
• C_MonC_Mon A Genuine Sucker
Same here. I only understand overclocking if you try to reach with a 2GHz P4, to 5GHz.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Or, if you, say, can't afford a new board or processor :D

Sounds like the power supply is going south dude. Better get it replaced pronto before it takes something with it....
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Or, on the other hand, let it go, taking the motherboard with it, and use it as an excuse to get an entirely new computer without feeling guilty. :)
• heh..I got an ATI radeon 9800 Pro for the price of a 9800 non pro.

(Same exact card...just a different bios...LMAO)

and then OC my CPU...and the card some more...and man...talks about FPS. :)
