Well, that's not the only relay and listening station, so I guess they would have tried with others if that strom would cause communication distruptions.
I'm really starting to wonder are they using Windows OS in these probes.
"Illegal operation. Please press the reset button." :D
Well, I think those big solar flares could have caused this. (when they were still traveling to Mars)
I cant remember the exact reasons but I think the Canberra dish has some sort of special advantage which makes it the preffered choice most of the time... the moon landing was sent via the Parkes dish.

The communications problems have been going longer than the time the Parkes dish has been pointed at Mars.
it blue screened, they gotta reboot, they will BBL ;)

SPIRIT UPDATE: - Jan 23, 2004, 6:30 am PST
The flight team for NASA's Spirit received data from the rover in a communication session that began at 13:26 Universal Time (5:26 a.m. PST) and lasted 20 minutes at a data rate of 120 bits per second.

Nice speed. :D
About same as that with Galileo when it was operating.

Perhaps Mars' atmosphere has become ionised. They should try reversing the polarity on their deflector dish.

No, no, they need to vent the warp plasma. That always works for everything.

They should have added a hyperspanner to that arm.

Good news!
"Hours before NASA's Opportunity rover will reach Mars, engineers have found a way to communicate reliably with its twin, Spirit, and to get Spirit's computer out of a cycle of rebooting many times a day."

Sounds much like problems with Win9x. :D
