Got an idea for a new contraceptive eh? :p

Or you could take a radio controller and play with the Mars Rover. :D

Yeah, with Sojourner for example.

That would be fun.
• I dunno... rovers aren't known for their speed...
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Naturally. Can you imagine a fast rover being controlled with a 9 minute lag? :D

"Look out for that rock!"
18 minutes pass.
"Well shit. Looks like our reactions were too slow."
• C_MonC_Mon A Genuine Sucker
But if I'm at Mars there won't be any lag.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Yes, but you'd be using a rover designed to be controlled from Earth, so it would still be slow.

I'll take my Nikko with me.
• Fine-tune the thing's engine with a little NoS... or a rocket. Surely NASA can spare one.

Sounds like Stardust was successful in its flyby of Wild 2. :)
• Well - Tonight is the big night for Spirit! :) And Sunday is the last best hope for Beagle II. Millions/Billions of Dollars on the line here...
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Yep. About 5 hours till Spirit's landing, if I got my timezone conversion right. :)
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
I got this from the Spirit homepage (although it seems a lot of people have suddenly got it from slashdot :)). You can use it to view the mars rovers, along with maps of where they've been, mission plans, and images from mars.

So far, things have gone almost perfectly.

The rover landed "base petal down", which means that the craft is right-side up. That makes deploying the solar panels much easier.

There's a chance that the rover might be sending back images tonight.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Yep, pictures possibly at 11pm PST. Tune into NASA TV to find out. :)

Damn, I should add that channel to my favorites list then..
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
It was quite entertaining during the landing. Every time something good happened, most people would jump up and start cheering, while you could here the rest yelling "Quiet!". :D
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
The first pictures from the surface were great. :) Entire panoramas, you could see the horizen, and there's even a handy boulder nearby for it to investigate. One of the people in mission control commented "Our rover is a rock magnet!" :D

I'm surprised the pictures taken so far have been low resolution black & white images.

I expected them to at least be in color.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
They didn't have much time to get data through, so they probably wanted to get as much information through as possible. By sending black and white images, they could get more information from less data.

hahah

I can just imagine what would happen if something went wrong....

*probe enters atmosphere*
*people cheer*
"QUIET!"
*probe lands*
*people cheer*
"QUIET!"
*video comes back showing "Who's Your Little Pak'Ma'Ra" instead of the martian surface*
*everyone rotates their heads 90 degrees*

The first pictures are from the navigation camera. The good ones will come later. It will take about 9 days before the rover starts, uh, roving.

Keep referring to NASA's site for more info.

The rover's powering up for the day and there's a news conference scheduled for 11:00 EST. It may include the first color picture.

Ah hell... Don't you guys know they are reusing the set from Red Planet for this marketting Promotion?

Those people are jumping up and down in that picture, not because of a successful mission, they are screaming "We got more funding... We got more funding!" :D :p

Please, don't get me started. These are the same bunch of people that lost billions in 1999. As you know there have been all kinds of specials on PBS about this launch: after the launch of the first rocket/rover one of the guys actually turns to the camera and goes "Ka-ching" (Like the cash register.) I'd go out of my mind if I had to work with that bunch of dimwit, longhaired, Gen-X fools. Where is the profesionalism? They jumped up and down like they had just won in vegas - you'd think they'd be confident in thier own work.

As far as the rover goes: Let's not count our chickens/billions before they've hatched - the rover still has not gone anywhere or done any tests. :)

I ask you - How is the shuttle? How is the ISS progressing? What is the Mars mission sucess average? When was the last time a human was on the moon? (Sorry - I'm feeling negative)
