I wonder how much it would cost. Would be cool having it at home. :p

Are you sure you would have enough space for it?

I've seen one "small" part (about 2m x 4m) of it's real solar panel which have been part of hubble. (over four years if I remember right)
So the whole satellite would be pretty big.
And if your yard is like those in cities it would fit.

Besides, i dont think that nasa would be willing to comit the resources to retrive hubble for a long time

Hubble is pretty damn big, but I'd happily rip out every wall in my home to fit it. :D

Well, this is good news, even if motives aren't just science.

Here's image where you see part of real solar panel and one tenth model.

(you can see from model how much that "small" part is from whole panel)

And in our continuing saga of the Hubble...

  • Well. Hubble is getting old. They will aways put a new Hubble up there.

My mind boggles about how much the thread on slashdot devolved into "its all bushes fault" jeesh, somebody just needs to take a look at the STS launch schedual and realize, with the loss of Columbia, there are just not enough resources to go around to fix hubble.

And why are they all proclaiming that NASA is doomed? some of them were on the right path, space has a strategic value to this adminstration. Its all about controlling the high ground.

Expect Bush to pull out of the non militirization of space agreement towards the end of a second term if he has one, predominatly because China isnt bound by the agrements and has already said they consider it an option.

Yeah, I think there is a good chance that if the current Chinese government survives long enough, they will quite happily start claiming territory and resources in space solely for China.

And then we will have our first war in space! w00t! dibs on the railguns!

Actually heatseekers would work well in space because of cold background.

Actually missles as a kill vehicle are probably sub optimal for space combat due to their inherent low potential velocities when compared to energy weapons or hyper kentic weapons.. i mean were talking relativistic speeds, either C or with railguns a decent fraction of C (I think .5 should be doable if you had superconducting rails) combat ranges honestly could be in double digit light seconds value, so time will be of the essence to engage.
