Exile's 1337 Gaming Rig is back in business! And the story of how we fixed is quite interesting:

The problems originally began when I placed a 20Gb HD and a 2x4 CD drive from an old, crappy comp into my good PC; I called the former the SATAN HD (as opposed to S-ATA :D), and things slowly went downhill after installing it, until we got to the point where my PC didn't work at all. We determined, because of the lack of any real reason for the problems, that a poltergeist was living in my PC, and messing things up. I took that HD out because a friend broke the Molex by trying to force it in backwards after a frustrating 2-hour troubleshooting session, and for a while the PC began working decently again... until it got even worse, and I could not even turn it on, because of "CPU Overclocking." We determined that this was because my crappy Enlight power supply couldn't handle my powerful rig (though it should have been able to), and my my motherboard (which can talk through my speakers, saying basic things like "System Failed Due To CPU Overclocking") thought my CPU was overclocked, and therefore requiring more power than it could get. Not taking into account the possibility that the poltergeist could have moved to a new portion of my PC, and begun feeding on the power I sent to it...
So anyways, we replaced my video card, processor, and motherboard over the course of 3 months, tried using different RAM, different (non S-ATA) hard drives, even different CD drives. We started joking about how my Fortissimo sound card was screwing it up, because there is really no way that could happen. So anyways, I was at a LAN tonight. We tried using a different PSU, hoping that my current one was defective, and it didn't work. So finally, we decided to take the sound card out; the CD drive connector WOULD NOT come unattached, no matter how much we wiggled and pulled; the poltergeist was hanging onto it's food source as hard as it could! So finally, the plastic female connector end popped off the card (not a problem, it's made to slide on and off), and we left the thing dangling in the case. Turning the PC on... it worked fine! So, here I am. Victorious over the forces of Darkness. :)

Well, now you have to remember not to touch any settings or "hardware" because fixing working machine breaks it.;)

    It won't last. :D

    Good for you exile.
  • In all seriousness though, how the @#%$ could a sound card mess up a PC? I was under the impression that it basically chanelled sound information from PC to speakers, and nothing else... but whatever.

And yes, it will last. :) P4s are, for all intents and purposes, indestructible, so we basically just kept increasing the voltage being sent to the CPU until the PC began turning on. I'm buying a non-crap PSU so I don't have to worry about this anymore, and a 6 (blue LED) knob fan controller... you will never convince me that 6 blue LED case fans + 6-knob blue LED controller = coincidence. It was divine intervention that caused me to find the thing.

(And yes, in case you were wondering, those case fans are a large part of the problem... as well as the Zalman heatsink... and the 2-fan HD cooler... :D nub is I)
