Okie dokie, i got a DVD +/-R +/-RW burner for christmas, along with +R and -R disks. now while i know the basic differences, organc dye for -R, newer format for +R, etc... etc... i still have a question.
while i know there's no DEFINITE answer, what should i use for DVD players (as in watching on the TV) and what should i use for DVD-ROM drives, and data disks?
From what i've gathered -R for DVD players (to ensure compatability) and +R for Data and DVD-ROM drives. could someone confirm or correct that assumption for me? or give me a little more info?
P.S.
It's a cool drive too, granted it's only Lite-On, but i've not had problems with them (yet).
It's:
4x -R 4x +R 40x CD-R
2x -RW 4x +RW 24x CD-RW
12x -Read 12x +Read 40x CD-Read
Not bad ;)

Use -R in general, since it's the most compatible. If you're only going to be using what you're burning in your (or another) DVD writer, then use whatever you happen to have.
yes have some..
i must concur with Biggles, i accidentally bought +R blanks, and while they play great in my dvd player, they generate read errors on the older players in the house, my burned -r's work on everything in the house.
Won't those need a burner capable of burning dual-layer discs?
Any burner capable of burning to both + and - R and RW disks will burn to them just fine and will be able of burning to both layers. Its the +R +RW and -R -RW only drives that'll only be able to read and burn to one layer. I feel sorry for the peeps that were dumb enough to buy those drives because they got screwed bigtime.
Oh good. :) But why the +/- ones only?
They were the first ones out, and prices for them dropped dramatically when the burners that could use both + and - were released.
No, I mean why can only burners capable of burning to both + and - media burn both layers of a dual layer disc?
Because the firmware for the other drives only supports burning to CERTAIN layers. They can burn to the dual layer disks, but to only one layer or the other. Not both. Hense why the people foolish enough to buy those drives are SOL if they want to burn to both layers.
Wouldn't that mean it would be possible to upgrade the firmware on those drives to support burning to both layers?
Possibly, but you run the risk of fubaring your drive since its very likely there have been some hardware changes since then.
LogicSequence: Yes. That was the biggest gripe people have made, which is why the dual layer disks are being produced for consumer use. They didn't come out initially because of the MPAA bitching about piracy....
I've got 2 in my good PC: a Plextor 52x24x52 DVD- and CD-everything, and a 4x2 PoS :D
I've got a 40x12x48 CD-RW (Digital Research, which is owned by Iomega) and my Lite-On LDW-411S which writes 4x (DVD+R\DVD-R), 4x (DVD+RW), 2x (DVD-RW), 40x (CD-R), reads DVD-ROMs at 12x, and 24x (CD-RW)...and I love it! :) I love having Freespace 2 on a single DVD-R instead of changing between 3 CDs (or in my case, 3 ISOs via Daemon Tools). (Before anyone starts bitching, I've owned the game for some time now.)
edit: Matter of fact, I think LogicSequence and I have the same drive. ;)

I've got a TDK indiDVD 440N +/- R +/- RW that i love.
Being able to do dual layers will be nice rather than having to re-encode commercial dvd's to fit like i have to do now.
works fine in my mom's DVD player, and in my DVD-ROM drive...
Maybe compatibility problem with your DVD player.
(also different DVD writer's write quality varies and your DVD player might require good quality to work)
Have you tried any other discs that you've burnt in the player?
Try with other "brand".
All discs doesn't work well with all writers.
ok question... or really bitchstion... why is it that a DVD-R a friend burned me a few months ago works fine in my DVD player but one (DVD-R) i just burned with my new DVD writer and DVD X COPY didn't work in it? it just sat there "reading" for umpteen minutes...?
Sounds like you have a bad burn problem there bro. Try using DVD Decrypter instead. Its free, and rips DVDs to ISO and IFO images. It can also allow you to burn DVDs without macrovision, and you can leave out useless stuff that takes up space on the disk like other languages, subtitles, etc.
However, the legality of this program is up in the air so I won't post the URL...but its rediculously easy to find with a google search. It also works with my DVD-RW. :)
so i think i'm gonna get this. This, is what dvdrhelp.com says it can play, looks good for $50-$60... DVD+/- R/RW VCD, MP3, PCD, WMA, SVCD, CD-R/RW, dvd video with data, XVCD, XSVCD, progressive scan, PAL support, etc...
P.S.
i like DVD X COPY... and u can leave out menus and languages and all sorts of shit with DVD X COPY too, it's the best ;)
When the burn finished however, the disc is useless... theres no menu on the disc, no way to navigate between features, etc... in fact it won't even play in ANYTHING... (no it's not a bad burn, the data is there and intact, i used windows explorer to see that much). so my question is... how the F do u use DVD X COPY to get the results i want? :)
I'd really like help with THIS program, not suggestions of other programs to use, if that's possible please :). I just don't want to go downloading this and that and trying whatever, i'd just like to stick with what i have unless there's no other option. thanks...
I'd love to be able to help ya dude...though might I suggest ripping to an ISO and mounting it with Daemon Tools before actually burning it to a disk and wasting 5 bucks?
Can you not use DVD X-Copy to burn an image (ISO)? Take that ISO and mount it via Daemon Tools.
