I normally take between 4½ and 5 hours for each WU.
I currently use a 1Ghz T'bird AXIA overclocked to 1.43Ghz - just normal SDRAM.
I'll be buying a new DDR system very soon with an AthlonXP CPU

Ping! I just got three more systems running for my name
Sanfam now has a 1 ghz Athlon with 384 mb of ram running the console 24/7, an Athlon 850 with 128 running the GUI client for most of 24/7, and a Pentium II 266 server with 48 mb of ram running the console 24/7.

Am I correct in remembering that the console performs the task more efficiently?
I remember hearing this somewhere. My nagging complaint with it is the constant presence in the task bar.

That's correct Sam.

Btw, where the heck do you get all those machines? You have a tree on your backyard which grows PC's?

Maybe I should challenge you and put my C-64 to crunch those units!

Recent additions:
PIII 600.
PII 450.
Possibly more P75's on the way.
Also: A few 166 systems might go somewhere soon. It all depends on if they'll accept the software.

I see that your total CPU years is 4.586 years - how many computers have you got running as you've only been a member for just over two years.
I currently have two, but might increase to three in January.

I'm runnin 8 processes on 7 machines, but some are only running the screensaver, (since they are the machines that belong to my wife, my kid and my parents)

my avg workunit time is so slow, because while this machine does a unit in about 5 hours or so, my Dual p120 takes like 100 hours/unit, as does my Mac.

I should be adding another machine or 2 soon, i've got a PII sitting here that i just need a harddrive for, And i've got a Dell Poweredge that was given to me thats going to become my main FreeBSD server, and i think i'm goin to run a seti process on that too.

I'm attempting to make a Pentium 233 into another network terminal. Perhaps in the kitchen or sunroom, but it too will run seti.

I can make that 8 in two days with only one computer. Actually 9-10 units.

You must have the same sort of system as myself PJH, as I too can get about 8-10 in two days.

I'm not sure what’s going on with Sam, but I think he needs a better compost.
And please remember that they need extremely small amounts of water otherwise they wont grow to their full potential.

Well, the big thing is that on some I run the console. This is simply because most are used by people who know squat about computers, and do get annoyed when it is "being slow"
I just let the Win32 client run in screensaver mode on those.

Sanfam, you could just use the console on these systems and change the SETI Client Priority option in SETI Driver to low.
This seems to give the computer enough resorces so that the average user cant see any visible difference in speed.
There seems to be little difference between the normal and high settings but these both can cause some noticable speed loss.

how would one set the priority to high?
• CactusheadCactushead Earthforce Officer beyond the rim
If you are using SETI Driver
in conjunction with the SETI Client then you can simply select the apropriate radio button to select either low, normal or high.

I would advise you use SETI Driver anyway as it also allows you to cache work units so you don't need to have a permanent internet connection. If you have something like a cable modem you may think you therefore don't need this as you can set it to send and receive work units as and when your client needs them, but occasionally you can't connect to Berkeley so you would loose valuable crunching time. A good example of this happened earlier this year asthey had a big problem when their cables where cut by accident. It took several days to get back to normal.

If you need any info on setting up SETI Driver you can visit the B5:ItF websites guides section

Important team B5:ItF news
==========================

You will have been aware that the site has had several problems with its database connection over the last few months.
This was purely down to my free webhosts but has been getting worse recently.
I had been researching various free and paid hosts to try and move the site over to a more stable server. It now looks as though I will definitely have to pursue this action as my hosts are going to cease free hosting in February.
Don't worry though because I'll hopefully have this sorted out way before then.
And I will keep you informed about the new web address the site will be using in the future, as and when it's sorted out.

If you want to suggest a web host (preferably a well known UK company) or the sites new name (and therefore web address) then hop along to our forums and post your ideas and views.
