Perhaps he's referring to the topic of the thread. A rare, but not unheard of, event.

I never really enjoyed those. Too much work for basic stress relief. FPS's are just pick up gun and shoot.
What? You can just hit one litle button all the time and sometime even win by that in "beat em up" games. Is that too much work for you? Some FPS's even got puzzles too, so they're not allways just grab a gun and shoot.

I've never really liked FPS's and I'll probably never will. Sure I can play UT2003 sometimes just for some stress relief. But think of this, the only FPS I've ever completed is Deus Ex. Maybe why I liked Deus Ex is because in a way it's a bit of RPG. :)

Where's the fun in randomly hitting buttons?

I'm currently reading "The history of Gaming" on gamecube-europe.com, and i've reached the "Video Game Crash" of 83.

some pretty interesting things:

Unsurprisingly, Atari weren`t too pleased with outlaw programmers making money off their console, and took Activision to court to shut these third-party developers down. They failed. And when they did, it opened the floodgates for every 2-bit developer and their dog to cash in with 2600 games. Every product you could name of was being shameless hawked in 'games'; even the cereal Quaker Oats had their own game. Atari had no control over the games being released for their console, they didn`t have any regulatory system because they never needed one.
[...]
Pretty soon these cheap, dire games were being dumped onto the shelves at a tiny fraction of other games prices, forcing proper developers on a self-destructive price-slashing trip. Thus, quality developers` profits plummeted, sending many out of business. Things weren`t looking good.

this reminds me of things like "extreme bull rider" or what ever those great sierra games were called..

and:
With so many dismal games on the shelves, as well as an amazing 10 consoles, the public just got fed up having to deal with all these products. Innovation was rare; the lack of improvement in consoles fed consumer apathy. Some consoles were even being released with no new techonology over the previous one [...]

You don't have to randomly hit buttons, try doing some combos instead!

Interesting you should say that, when PSX is a pretty cool product... and just the first step in Sony's plans.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Personally, I think the PSX is a piece of crap.

Especially since they downgraded the specs about a month before release...

the games industry as a whole needs a damned big shake up.

the developer who strikes upon a much better financial model to build games with, will win, and win handsomely.

the current system is fucked, categorically fucked.

publishers and developers for the most part have very bad relationships, they fight over budgets and content and the degree of control over the product and it all leads to bitterness and just generally evil situtations.

no developer wants to patch a game they were forced to release early while it was still laden with bugs. most of the time you can lay the blame squarely on the Publisher, unlike the movie industry, progress and change within the games industry is rapid and hard to 'pin a price' on. Movies are about catching light, storing it for later projection. That may be a gross summary but lets face it, thats what it is.

Games on the other hand... enormously complex beasties which can change overnight, in terms of content, technical specs and delivery even. Signing a contract for "X" dollars, even if there is some allowance for patching and overruns... its likely to get ugly.

so what do you do ?

you talk to me..:D

I think I have a soloution.

Which should guarantee a good gaming experience for gamers, developers and Publishers.
