BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Here I am, making a rare post from outside my nutrient tank, to announce that the Babylon 5 DVD is indeed available in the 4th Region, and that I have a copy in my cold little hands right now! Mwahahahaa!

Anyway, the extras are listed as:

Interactive Menus (why is that an extra?)

Scene Access (again, why?)

Dolby Surround 2.0

English and French subtitles

Cast & Crew
So, not a whole heap of extras.
The DVD is double sided and comes in the standard case (not the shitty cardboard ones that WB often uses). They used what looks like the normal In The Beginning cover. Haven't had a chance to run it yet due to the lack of a DVD player/drive where I am. I'll watch it when I get home and report back unless someone else reports back first and saves me the trouble. Big L's:

Is it just In the Beginning or does it have the other title included as well?
  • The region 4 version has both movies (i know that for a fact). I'm guess that there is one on each side of the single dvd???
  • BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Just for the curious (note: high quality images):
    The front of the cover
    The inside of the cover

    Correct, one on each side.
The video quality of The Gathering I would describe as a little above TV quality. Better than a recorded version.
In The Beginning has excellent quality video and sound, the CGI especially looks great. It's also good looking in wide screen (especially the battle of the line!). Unfortunately, the high quality video means it is easier to notice the slight movement of the camera in scenes that show people talking. This is only in In The Beginning though, not The Gathering. On that note, the version of The Gathering is the TNT special one, with the new music, no title sequence, etc.

Falcon1: It's a double sided disc. This means the only indication of what is on it is the small writing around the hub. The rest of the disc on both sides is shiney data area.

Double-sided is good. Means more data was stuffed onto it. (Or, they were too cheap to print a logo. )

Ok, could someone please explane to me why, just why, that a two-sided DVD with one movie on it can switch layers smack in the middle without me getting up and manually filpping it over like an excessivly shiney burger, but two-sided DVD's with two movies (or two versions of the same movie) have to be filpped over manually?

Wait, back up for a moment.

  • BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
David of Mac: Yes, quite easily. DVD's work like so: Each side has 2 layers. The tracks on each layer are interlaced so the laser can go between the tracks on the first layer to get to the tracks on the second. A double sided DVD has two sides with each side made up from two layers. Now then, you may have heard the figure of ~17GB of storage on a DVD. This comes from ~4GB per layer. Two layers per side = ~8GB per side. Two sides = 4 layers = ~16GB (~17GB) per disc. Thus a movie of one side can change layers because the disc does not need to be flipped. There is sometimes a small delay on layer change because the laser needs to move from the outside of the disc to the inside and seek to the beginning of the track while maintaining a constant read speed. Double sided discs, on the other hand, will need to be flipped when going between two sides because there isn't a laser on top as well.

    TheSaint: Yes. Cold little ones.

The Gathering is full screen (how it was filmed), and In The Beginning is in widescreen (how it was filmed).

They will play in any DVD-ROM drive from the correct region or region free. They will play in any DVD player (the kind that plugs directly into your TV) from the correct region.

What if I have to have it connected into a box where it is then connected to my VCR? (because my stupid TV has no connector)

  • hmm, way off topic, but on the note of DVD technology, something I've always wondered... when the 'people in charge of THAT' standardized the format, why in the world did they have layer 1 track from the inner ring to the outer ring, then have layer 2 do the same?? seems it would eliminate the tracking delay if layer 2 began on the outer ring and progressed to the inner... just a random thought...

  • BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
I was guessing that they both started from the inside because of the delay.

rhett: Same as having it plugged into your TV. That means you have a DVD player (unless it's your computer that is plugged into the VCR).
