Well, I just received my replacement set from Amazon.co.uk today and it's going back too. Unsurprizingly three of six DVD's were badly damaged and I'm also asking for a refund this time around and I'll do just like Data Crystal and wait for a new release.

Well, this is very disappointing, to say the least.

Have anybody heard anything official from Warner about this "piece of shit box-design" release?
• Data CrystalData Crystal Pencil Artist
I doubt they'll release any official statement about this. That would scare away customers even from a later, legit release. My guess is that they'll just say that there were material defects on the first batch and that it's repaired now and the new superduperworkinfine boxsets are on stores now. Go buy one and be happy and don't criticize us.

Dear Customer

Thank you for contacting us at Amazon.de

We have been informed that there was a problem with the whole
consignment and therefore ask you to send back your copy in full,
stating on the delivery note whether you would prefer a refund or to
wait until we receive a new, error-free consignment so we can send
you a replacement.

That's from Amazon.de's english department. I think they'll really just simply pull back the whole batch, replace it with a new one and continue business as usual.

/EDIT Can't say this is a bad thing, though. If people are discouraged to buy any B5 on DVD's, that will inevitably cause problems with future B5 DVD releases. We get poor sales now? We might never see Crusade or so forth...

What would you say about nice little e-mail bombing campaign against them?

• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
Yes, I confirm, that's the guilty piece, it's exactly that plastic crown that's causing all those scratches when the DVD's are bouncing around inside the box set during transit.

Patent pending for this wonderful new method of destroying DVDs simply by placing them in the retainer, then posting them around. This wonderful invention allows the postal service to do all the DVD destruction for you!

what you don't see in that picture are the numerous "micro-fine(tm) razor blades" designed to best even the most expensive shredder.

I think precise model might be this:

Now just have to deside to what address sent my "small" complains:

Hmm... looks like the R1 packs use a different retainer design, though it's also from NexPak. That would explain why I have no scratched discs in any of my sets....
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
It still isn't anywhere near as good as the R4 retainers.
• Data CrystalData Crystal Pencil Artist
Well I'll be...

So it seems that the second shipment is coming at the 15th of December, good in all but not the best, look at the price!

!!!29.99!!! And yes, Euro's about 1.18 dollars and all that but it's still pretty darn cheap. I ordered it at 45.99 at the time... ;) Looks like they've hit the nail where it hurts, they don't want to scare customers away from this one. If I'd only get those 50e's refunded which Amazon still owes me, I'd be well off now... :p

This whole 'Full & Tasty Seasoning' is going to be a lot cheaper than what I expected it to be. :D
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
Good for you Data Crystal. I'm also waiting for my refund.

The odd thing though is that on the Amazon.co.uk site the same faulty season 3 set is still being sold as before. Business as usual, no sign of a new set or admission of a production fault there.

I guess I'll have to go with a Region 1 set if there is no new release, but for now further orders of this product have been postponed indefinitely.

got an email today from Play.com saying that they'll refund the B5 s3 dvdbox.
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
I did get my first return postage refunded today. Now I need to get the second one refunded and not to mention the full price of the DVD set.

It's amazing how many repercussions a faulty box design can have for one set, let alone several hundred thousands or more.
• MundaneMundane Elite Ranger
got my money from play.com...my only problem is that if I want to buy the set from a shop here, I have to pay the double of the price at play.com, 85£...but worth it having a proper set without scratches I believe, christmas gift to myself :)

It's a pitifully small number, I know.

Are the same box defects in the second season? I ask because Play has knocked the price down for it and I only have the first season DVD but if there are going to be a large number of returns.....
• It seems my good fortune has still held out. :D

I received my S3R2 set today and as with S1 and S2 I have had no damaged discs :p, though I think my S3 box set might have been from the new hasty production as there is no printed paper between the disc holders.

What can I say someone must actually be smiling on me.

I think it's from same production lot.
This disc scratcher release doesn't have papers between disc holders. (at least I don't have)
Check my earlier message where I posted image of this "patented disc scratching retainer" and compare it to your box. If it looks same it's propably from same lot.
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
I do have a theory on what the actual problem is concerning those retainers. It's true that the retainer crowns scratched the discs, but I doubt it's the retainer design that caused the discs to get knocked loose inside the box, since half of the discs remained locked in position. I suspect it's the machine that placed the discs onto the retainers that was either misaligned or failing and thus allowed the discs to freely move inside the box. On the other hand if there hadn't been any crown in the first place, perhaps we all would have gotten unscratched loose discs in our box sets and 100% satisfaction.

A friend of mine also got an unscratched set from the same lot.

That's life.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
From what I've seen the problem is simply that the retainers don't do what they're supposed to do. If the problem was placement, more would have the issue. As with the S1 and S2 box sets, I've often seen the discs outright fall out of the thing. I've considered cutting it off and replacing it with a foam cylinder, but I do not wish to damage the box that much...

I agree completely.

You're right Stingray that about half of discs will stay in locked position but retainers are still faulty because it's impossible to get discs of from them without fear of breaking disc. (because those retainers that doesn't drop disc when moving box hold discs on place too tightly)

If those retainers would have been properly designed that crown could be there without any worries for scratching disc because real retainers would hold discs on their places (and have release mechanism for disc's easy take of without fear of breaking disc)

Well, Amazon.uk processed my second returned box set and refunded the money. I guess that at least shows that their refund policies work. Now I'm still stuck without a 3rd season set. I guess I'll wait until the 4th set comes out before ordering it again, perhaps somewhere else, but it's sad to have to resort to lottery to buy this darn thing.
• MundaneMundane Elite Ranger
Bought myself a copy of S3 at a local story yesterday..had to pay 107 Euro but....at least the set looks okay this time
• Data CrystalData Crystal Pencil Artist
Amazon.de is charging 29.99 for Season 3 now. So I'll probably wait a week or two for the new batch to arrive, if the news are good and we get new retainers I'll order it. If not... well, I'll order 6 copies and make one that works out of 'em and return the rest for a refund.
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
I was thinking the same thing after I got the second damaged set, ordering 4 or 5 sets and making one good set and returning the rest. :) But I'm not so sure if this would have helped since in both sets the same discs appeared to have been scratched.

What I don't understand is why they don't check the sets before they ship them out since there obviously is a problem with this particular product?! Seems like it's cheaper to piss off customers than to have a few people check a few crates of DVD sets. (All you have to do is shake the boxes and listen if there are a few discs loose inside, you don't even have to open them.)

Again, Amazon.uk didn't even acknowledge the fact that there was a problem unlike their German counterpart.

It's not that big of a deal, just disappointing. In retrospect they might have saved more money by packaging each disk separately, like the James Bond box set for example.
• Warlord IIWarlord II Earthforce Officer
Waiting seems to pay off. I got my season 3 today and it was probably checked because plastic cover around the box was partially cut off. There was only one small scratch in disk 4 and I'm definetly not going to return it for that. This was from Finnish online store, probably more expensive than from some foreign online stores but what can you do without a credit card.
• Data CrystalData Crystal Pencil Artist
You know, they didn't give me a credit card either. I'm using a Visa Electron from Sampo which you can get without any hassle. Works fine in Play.com, Amazon.de and so on...

So, you ordered from Filmifriikki or Kukunor methinks... am I right? I'm waiting for reviews on the new batch, see if the defect's still there.
