DIY subwoofers?

FreejackFreejack Jake the Not-so-Wise
Anyone know of any quality plans for a DIY sub box for a home stereo set-up? I'd to build something that can handle more bass than my puny $99 sony 8" job. Its a decent little active subwoofer for most uses, but in films were the sound is signifigant (LOTR, Matrix), it just can't handle it.

I didn't see any more expensive boxes that seemed to be a good value and I'm a pretty good woodworker, so I figured I could build my own.

The part I am hesitant about is the box design itself. It seems like it would be easy to make an expensive speaker sound bad with the wrong box design.

Anyway, any suggestions?

Jake

maybe out of your price range but the LFE-3 from VAF is THE bass frequencies speaker.

If you want the best bang for your buck this is the best buy.

As far as building your own cabinets, dont bother trying unless you have very accurate specs on the drivers youre using. Good sound reproduction is based on case volume, on internal dampening, on internal reflections and a whole host of other things. It's easy to make something that sounds ok.... its friggin hard to make something that sounds excellent.
