Troy

I saw the Matrix:Revolutions today and was pleasantly surprised to see a teaser trailer for Troy. Without giving anything away the opening scene on the big screen took my breath away.
You can see it online here but it doesn't have nearly the same impact. It should be out May 2004, and looks promising so far. Anyone else looking forward to this?

Yeah. That was a lot of ships.
• *tsk*

"The face that launched a thousand ships" c'mon, everyone has heard that line!

Could be good to watch.

I'm interested in this primarily because Wolfgang Peterson will be moving on to Ender's Game after this.

That's the single greatest book I have ever read, and while my repertoire of books isn't so great as it will someday be (brilliant observation there, eh? :D), that is saying something. I can't say I believe the movie will be a tenth so good as the book (There was that rumor about the kid from The Sixth Sense starring, and I hope so, because he's the only person I can imagine so much as coming close to nailing Ender), but I would like to see what they do with the the Battleroom scenes... could be interesting. Twill be interesting, also, to see what they do with the Bonzo fight... two naked kids fighting to the death in a shower. :p

And yeah, Troy looked pretty cool. The friggin' camera kept panning out for maybe twenty seconds, showing a fleet comprised of, basically, Earth's entire population during that time.
• Hehe, someone at the theater spoke like this after the trailer: "BRAD PIT?! Now there goes that movie!"

Yeah, that was my first reaction. After seeing the teaser poster he kinda fits what I pictured Achilles as looking like however.

Have to ask my professor. I'm actually taking a course right now called Troy and the Trojan War.

I love college. :)

Waitwaitwait... a movie based on Ender's Game? They'll never get it right. Never.
• BekennBekenn Sinclair's Duck
Orson Scott Card wrote the script. He also has veto power, if I understand things correctly.

There was also a time when I would have argued that Lord of the Rings could never, ever be done correctly.

Will it be the same as the book? No. Will it be a good re-telling of the story in movie form? Perhaps. Will it be a good movie in its own right, regardless? We'll see.

That rumor is way out of date now. Haley Joel Osment is too old to play Ender; OSC won't let it go forward unless the actor who plays Ender is less than twelve years old, or could reasonably appear to be that young.

I still have my doubts.

As do I, but it'll probably be decent, provided they can find actors to fit the parts....
• JackNJackN <font color=#99FF99>Lightwave Alien</font>
ok...

Two questions: since we've already deviated from the Troy portion of this thread...

Who gets to do Bean?

and whatever happened to the movie for Startide Rising?

Heard anything recently John?

:)
• Come to think of it, watching the movie version would probably ruin my mental pictures of all the characters, and spoil my love for the book...
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
My problem exactly.
• BekennBekenn Sinclair's Duck
No actors have yet been chosen. I went to see OSC in Pasadena last night (got some books signed and some questions answered... I even joked about wanting to see a B5 novel with his name on it (which, okay, wasn't really a joke, because I do want to see a B5 novel with his name on it -- but he said he'd probably screw up the universe)), and he talked a bit about the Ender's Game movie, but I got there a little late and nothing he said seemed to me to be particularly new. Except that it seems he doesn't have veto power. The studio (Warner Brothers, by the way) has the rights to the movie, and ultimately it's the studio that gets to decide what's in the movie. That said, Card says he has confidence that they won't pull any dirty tricks, and that he wouldn't have sold them the rights otherwise.

Here's the input he does have: He wrote the current draft of the screenplay, which apparently other (more experienced) screenwriters are going over right now. OSC and Wolfgang Peterson will go over whatever they come up with, and decide together which changes are good changes and which are bad. In this way, Card at least has some amount of content control.

Judging from things he's said elsewhere, I would guess that Card will be involved in casting decisions, though probably not in any official manner. But it looks like Peterson wants to keep Card involved with the movie, which can only be a good thing.
• Tell him to come out East some time, so I can go see him. Best damned author I've ever read anything by. :D :D :D :D
• BekennBekenn Sinclair's Duck
Well, you can check his tour schedule.
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
No veto?

It's going to suck.
• The closest he ever comes to me is NC, maybe Ohio. That's a long drive, considering I need to find someone else interested enough to drive me/get me a fake permit.
• BekennBekenn Sinclair's Duck
Maybe he went by you earlier in the tour; oh, well.

He lives in NC, by the way.
• Oh well, I plan on going to college in CA... :(
• BekennBekenn Sinclair's Duck
Whereabouts?

Bollocks if I know... the epicenter of the US gaming world is in Cali, so I figure I'll go to college there for something computer (probably programming) related. I think I'd rather be a developer, or conceptual artist, but my drawing skills aren't nearly as good as my imagination... and I'm pretty good at what little programming I've forced myself to stop procrastinating and learn.
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
You sound a lot like me. :) If you want to do proper programming, I recommend an engineering degree.
• BekennBekenn Sinclair's Duck
Computer science worked fine for me; I got my degree from Chapman University in Orange at the end of last semester, and am now doing cell phone game development.

I would never work as a programmer on anything not related to gaming. Probably end up starting up something with some friends and failing miserably a few times, before getting a real job. :p

And I've always got writing, although I don't suppose that'll pay the bills until I become famous. Not the until. :D

[Edit]I quoted myself, but I meant to quote Biggles. gj me!
• So yeah... about Troy........
