Defragmentor...

OK, for whatever reason windowsXP's disk defragmentor freezes as soon as it starts. (I mean a HARD freeze, no option but to reset the machine)

any other options? Good downloadable disk defragmentor out there? my PC's at the point that is REALLY needs to be defragmented....

Have you scanned the harddrive in Windows before degragging?

Errors on the disk can often cause defraggers to have issues.
  • yep.
of course the scan disc on win XP doesn't give you a report...

far as I know no errors found

Norton Speed Disk has always served me well, so has Disk Doctor. They're both part of System Works.

Perhaps the tool's binary has become corrupt or something.
  • I [will someday] use Disk Defragmenter Pro, I believe it's called. I don't actually HAVE IT yet, but I know it's got a cool little icon, and my friend Colin says it's great.

Make sure any virus scanning programs you have aren't running. Better yet, try booting in safe mode and defraging, in my experience it goes a lot faster without the background stuff running.

Boot with the XP CD, choose repair XP installation. Do FIXBOOT and FIXMBR. Then try the scandisk again. After that, retry the Defrag.

Heh, yeah, same friend. Difference is, he's good at clicking the "Defrag" button, whereas fixing an arrayed, demonically possessed hard drive is something best handled by experts.
