Cool...to me thats what jump gates would look like. with the more natural, random coloring and shape as oppossed to the rigid, even pattern of the B5 gates.

  • Must be such a cool job.....to give a show a style for it's graphics.........pure art now-a-days

    Slade:

I think "generic" was the wrong descriptor to use.

I love it, I really do, but there does seem to be something lacking in it compared to previous jump gates.

Now before I go on, I need to clarify the fact that we are only seeing one frame of the animation, so take my following comments with a grain of salt...

The thing I've put my finger on is that it appears to be a bit flat in the energy department.

Again, this may be due to the particular frame we are seeing, but I would expect to see a large amount of light ambience coming from an opened jump gate.

The old Lightwave days used a lens flare for this, but I'm sure Maya can out do the use of lens flares which have been overdone soo much.

    Something else I just noticed...

There's no more solar (Heat exchanger) panels on the Jump Gate anymore!

Not that there's a problem with that or anything...

    Jack:

Well I was just kidding around, sort of

I think everyone was really trying to avoid the "typical" CG stuff with this show, especially when it came to the use of lens flares. I prefer the new look, although the old one was pretty cool in it's day.

As for the heat exchanger thing, there is a reason for that, although I won't say what it is. Howcome people always assume that the EA are the only ones who make jumpgates?

  • that's what I thought - it is another race's jump gate - simple
  • BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Umm... they're all jump points, no matter what tech generates them. And remember that they all got the tech from the same place.

As for that particular point, I think it looks too generic as well. It instantly reminds me of a subspace drive from FreeSpace. The B5 jump points are supposed to look like funnels into nothing, not some wavery energy hanging in space.

Overall I think they look ok, though I have to say the jumpgate effects in a Call to Arms were simply stunning! I would have preferred if they used those really.

NO, the EA jump gates look different from the Narn jump gates. So do these ones. and remember this is and ancient race, how do we know that they aren't one of the races that invented the damn things

If they weren't, they still are more advanced than us and there backwards engineering probably comes up with something better than we did

Notice that the gate @ Za'Ha'Dum used three gate thingies instead of the standard four which were the most widely used.

  • hey, the thing i noticed previously in trailer and now on this image - it looks here that liandra is *entering* the jump point... in the railer two alien ships were also entering a blue one... so why is the vortex blue instead of yellowish? Slade?

Are you talking about jump gates or jump points? All jump points should (and do, in B5) look the same. Jump gates may vary depending on who builds them.

So is Trek TOS and TNG, but would you rather they had used the TOS warp effect in TNG? I don't think so.

TOS had no warp effect. The first time we saw a ship go to warp on the outside was in TMP. And I would prefer it to be something more like the TMP warp effect, thankyouverymuch. Light trails make so much more sense then the ship stretching out like a rubber band. I'm glad Enterprise has returned to it's roots with it's warp effect.
