Ok... there doesn't seem to be topic on this so I made one.

I just went to see it today and I have to say that this is DEFINITELY my favourite movie of this year, Revolutions / ROTK or no... I'll have to give it a full five star treating and two thumbs up. Plus some severed, bloody extra ones as well.

It's the fourth movie by Tarantino and if you don't like his films, you probably won't like this one either, but if you like 'em, this one's for you. More than for you. Heck, this IS you.

--And to all those that like asian women, samurai fiction, The Art Of War, black humour, school uniforms, Lucy Liu, katanas, good swordplay, even more black humour and some bloody /& fantastic animation, to the movies , mush mush. :) Refa, this includes you.

The movie is rated R at least here in Finland, probably in Europe alike as well, and for a reason. Expect blood. Lots and lots of blood. Fling a sharp katana around and things are bound to get messy. :) Even besides the blood, the movie is absolutely stunning visually and although the bloodsprays are intentionally exaggerated in many scenes it still doesn't ruin the film. Some of the shots in the movie from chapter 3 on are almost artistic. I've seen worse paintings than some angled shots they used to portray the final confrontation between Lucy Liu and Uma Thurman.

And even the start of the film is beautiful. A quote from Star Trek begins the film (Has to do with Klingons and Revenge, figure it out ;)) and the first shot you see is a black&white shot of Uma Thurman's face, obviously tortured, panting and bleeding from more places than there are orifices on her head... I just fell in love with that shot... almost literally. I even considered it for my wallpaper. And I still do.
--Not to mention that the shot ends with a bullet shot through her head... And believe me, I'm not spoiling anything here. ;) From there on in, you're hooked. At least if you're a sick bastard like me. :)

I know I have a fixation with poetic scenes & portrayals of agonized, bleeding beautiful women (And Uma Thurman definitely qualifies) in 'em but that's no biggy... It's actually pretty weird that the some things that you find utterly, unspeakably beautiful are the ones that are the most horrific in real life... or maybe it's just me. Yup, it's just me.

Right now, I'm waiting for volume 2 more than Return Of The King & Revolutions combined. Really.

This movie seems to divide people, you definitely need a sort of mentality for this kind of stuff. I have one, I enjoyed the whole movie immensely and I wouldn't have been disturbed one bit if it would have been the whole 4-hour marathon that the dual movies create...

So, if you haven't seen this one yet, Go see it, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

We want DVD!

/EDIT: And to those blessed with Hi-Bandwith connections, here's a high-quality trailer.

/EDIT: The trailer seems to contain a few scenes that weren't in the movie... hmm... interesting. And Morden279, it IS bloody fantastic. In all meanings of the sentence. :D

  • Kill Bill is meant to absolutely fantastic, and as a fan of Tarantino's films, I personally can't wait to see it. :)

I saw it on an imax screen. 'Twas very good. Lotsa blood. :)
  • Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
Does the pretty pretty japanese girl from Battle Royale fame die a gruesome death, and all shown? If not, i'm not gonna bother until they're both on dvd, if i'm still alive.
  • Damn great film! Saw it today.
Over the top violence and great music, some parts remind a bit of Ennio Morricone's music from Sergio Leone's westerns, and the film itself reminds me sometimes about those films. Beautiful pictures.

Everything works and there's blood everywhere, great!

You mean the one with the chain-mace ball? It's quite funny actually, I don't recall the way she died. She did get a close acquaintance with high heels and a bump on the head, yes, but how did she die... hmm... don't remember. Help me out here. My best guess is either a decapitation, something sharp stuck to her forehead or a deep lunge. :) But yes, it is all gruesome and yes it's all shown. Go watch it and have a ball. :) You'll love it, at least I did. Which isn't saying much but still...

--And she gets quite a lot of screentime in comparison to the other "quick thugs". :) I think that the fight scene between her & The Bride is one of the longest one-on-ones on the film. And she's the first real opposition the Crazy 88's offer. :)

The only drawback I've discovered in the movie is that the big fight between Uma & The Crazy 88's in the tea house is black & white. The japanese version shows it all in colour, and although the b&w works very well in the making, it could be a form of cencorship for the US / European releases, although I think QT said it was homage to the old bw samurai movies. Don't know if I buy that. The contrast is very good when they cut back to color and Uma looks down on the teahouse floor, though... blood. Loads of blood. I was almost expecting that the wife of the tea-house would slip on the floor. :)

I'll probably have to rent the colour-dvd at some point when it's out to decide which one I'd like to buy. Prefereably a deluxe edition with both versions, that would be beautiful.

Personally I found it a bit too bloody...I couldn't help thinking of Monty Python and the Holy Grail when arm stubs started fountaining blood :p Very artistic cinematography though, beautiful :) My favourite scene was the blue backlit swordfight in the teahouse.

I'll definately be going to see the second half.

That was the idea. More to the point, the gratuitous fountains of blood were an homage to kung fu films.
  • BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
Plus the over the top blood makes it unrealistic and thus bearable. If it had been realistic, I think I would have been sick 15 minutes into the movie.
  • I'm kinda undecided here...saw it on your recommendations...

    plot = good
scenes = good, (In reference to the order they were shot, layout, etc)
Music = horrible, absolutly HORRIBLE. every time they started to do the music right, they cut it off, or changed style into something horrid. Music is more then 50% of the film for me, and this runined it for me.

blood....OK, can we say OVER THE TOP!?!? I enjoyed the parts where it was done properly, not to much kinda thing...the anime section was good other then to flood of blood in it, I mean, there must have been 300 gallens of blood in that old guy! The fountains from the limbs also detracted from the movie IMHO, none would have been sooo much better. Having watched alot of old sameri movies, I can safely say this does NOT do any homage to them, it pokes fun at them.

also, the stupid "CHAPTER THREE" things ruin the flow of the movie...

    Consensus:
Has potential, but the music and over the top blood ruins it. I'm easy to please when it comes to movies, but this....just doesn't cut it.

    Watch Seven Sameri instead. :D
  • also, I was upset by the previews...
The new Russle Crowe movie stole the Children of Dune soundtrack, That alone is going to keep me from watching this film, as every time I hear some of the music I'm going to think back to a scene from CoD....

and the Alamo is using the music from Gladiator, which of course was done for another film which I didn't see. Point is, I'm going to think of the correlating scenes from Gladiator as the music plays = not going to see film.

    HOLLYWOOD;
QUIT BEING CHEAP ASSES AND MAKE YOUR OWN MUSIC FOR PETES SAKE.
  • Stole? Personally I don't care who uses the music as long as I can hear it. Why hold recognizing good music against them?
  • PhiPhi <font color=#FF0000>C</font><font color=#FF9900>o</font><font color=#FFFF00>l</font><font color=#00F
I don't think using the music in the trailer means they'll use it in the actual movie. One of the Two Towers trailers used a redone version of the Requiem for a Dream theme, and I've heard lots of trailers use Mars from Holst's Planets. (both very nice pieces :)) The actual score for the movie isn't finished till they have a rough cut, so they just need appropriate music to fill in and sound good. :)

    What plot?
  • I hope your right Phi....'cause the score means a whole lot in a film...

    and biggles...(SPOIELRS)

She was an assasain, we don't know if they betrayed her, or she they, but in the end they beat her up, took her child, and left her for dead. she decides to systematically kill them for revenge. This movie is about that...

how did you miss that BTW?
  • samuelksamuelk The Unstoppable Mr. 'K'
Movie studios use other films' soundtracks in trailers all the time. It has been like that for years.
  • FreejackFreejack Jake the Not-so-Wise
Yup, I heard the soundtrack for ST:Generations in a trailer just the other day, but I can't remember for what movie...

The funniest use of unrelated music in a trailer was a Winnie The Pooh preview I saw in the theater, played to the background music of Semi-charmed Kinda Life (instremental). A Pooh movie with a background music that talked about doing meth...

I think the trailer tells the plot even better than the movie itself. I think the trailer works as a prologue that isn't in the movie and the movie goes on from there.

And I thought that the music choices were perfect for the kind of film in question. Some people hate it, I like it. Call it a style. :D

Because the plot really isn't that important. Thus I know what it is, but also know that it's fairly simple and just an excuse for all the cool fight scenes.
