Ohh I like that idea! Change each light blue stripe so that each one is slightly darker than the one above.

You don't have to change each stripe separately Biggles. That would be very clumsy and difficult. Just use the gradient tool for the background layer.
And yeah it does need some dimension. The colours look a bit too pale for me also. And the style doesn't fit with the rest of the site. Of course that might change when you get the new site design up. The forums could use some redesign/new colours too IMHO. I never liked this current one.

I can handle a grey background...but not white. It hurts my eyes too much. (and my monitor is at 40% contrast/brightness btw)
