Actually there are a significant number of technological breakthroughs we are sitting on the cusp of, if only there was a power source strong enough to drive them.

It is a well known fact that a laser beam-shield collision results in an explosion comparable to that of a nuclear missile.
So the moral is, "shields aren't a good idea"... :D

The moral is, "Brush up on your sword-fighting skills"
:D
I always thought that rail guns and hyper-velocity projectile weapons was the next step up.
Rail gun and hyper-velocity projectile weapons are practically same thing.
Maybe you could call these as exception which confirms the rule:
LOSAT, hyper-velocity KEM:
http://www.designation-systems.net/dusrm/m-166.html
http://www.missilesandfirecontrol.com/our_products/antiarmor/LOSAT/product-LOSAT.html Watch those videos :D (And if you watch closely enough you can see the shockwave of explosion in first video)
FRSW, ARRMD and HyStrike/
But I think these "traditional" methods work as well against AFV as LOSAT:
http://www.missilesandfirecontrol.com/our_products/antiarmor/JAVELIN/product-JAVELIN.html and watch videos (first video is little over exposed, this is better: http://koti.mbnet.fi/tuunaes/JavelinLiveFireVsT72.mpg)

I know, I was using both terms to make sure people knew what I was going on about.

I love how they have so many parentheses in the article, because every other word is a friggin' acronym.
Echo Tango, Sign off.
NASA is nothing when it comes to acronyms. You should try the communications industry some time.
Tell me about it.....
Remind me to NEVER read the damn manuals ever again.....especially for as a source for a mid-term paper.
