Personnally the omega is my favourite.
Back to the original topic what i meant the current design shift to the iron head shape is ridiculous and unimaginative. Jez you think the would show more originality but instead we get something that seems to be a variation of the voyger shape. Plus I swear the soverign looks like a cut up ST model thats been glued together with fresh bits.
Come on how about some variety. Like more than two warp nerceles come to think about it the defiant is probably the most original design. Whats the other classes refered to above.
Me and my mates have always said that the Voyager's saucer section looks like a toilet seat. ;)
I don't know, maybe the conceptual "artists" for Trek decided that pointed and streamlined meant "more modern" in terms of Federation Starships compared to the ones from the films and early TNG.

I believe the excuse is that "the delta shape is better for warp flight" or something.
Regarding all ships having 2 nacelles: Have you noticed that nearly every ship from every race has only 2 nacelles? There are only a few federation ships with more or less than 2. While it's probably just a coincidence, you could excuse it by saying that 2 nacelles gives the most even warp field or something.
OKay.... Umm, is everyone forgetting about the ENTERPRISE-C?!??!? (Ambassador class) I thought that one was actually pretty cool looking too.
Also, let's not forget the PROMETHEUS!!!! 4 Nacelles!! And the Hathaway and Stargazer - Also 4 nacelles!
Now, who was saying something about there being only 2 nacelles or less on Fed. ships? :P
Besides, if you look closely, you'll notice that the Neg'Vhar actually has 4 nacelles, too. They're 2 on top of each other, on either side. 1 on top of the wing, 1 on bottom. Go on.. take a look.
So I don't wanna hear this crap again about all races in ST using ships with only 2 nacelles or less. I'm sure there are even more ships that have been featured on the show, with at least 3 nacelles. (or more)
I also favor the Federation Type-II shuttlecraft (the ones on Voyager). They're freakin' cool.
I also love the Defiant class, and Akira class. Sovereign ain't too bad, either. Miranda and Selluze (sp?) are okay.
Not too fond of the Excelsior class, Nebula class, Danube class (runabouts), Streamrunner, Stargazer/Hathaway, nor that medical ship Dr. Krusher commanded in "All good things...." Yuck!!! Talk about the most dreadful, ugliest thing to ever graze our tv screens! lol
And come on now!!! What's wrong with the Galaxy class?!?!!? It's not THAT bad!! Besides, with that 3rd Warp drive and Delta Phaser cannon thingie (refit in All Good Things..) it totally kicked ass!!! Warp 13, engage!!!
As for B5 ships, I love the Hyperion. Plain and simple... It's submarine-ish! hehehe :D
I don't know about the Omega... looks rather ugly, if you ask me. But the Hyperion.... Gotta love that shape... and so much nicer color, too! Grey and blue!

*cough* Constellation-class *cough* (U.S.S. Stargazer comes to mind)
RubberEagleWhat's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
now, the U.S.S: Pasteur (Dr. Crusher's ship in "All good things") was the original design for the enterprise ;)
as for the 2 nacelle syndrom: they once decided ( i think it was in late tng), that every ship needs to have an even amount of nacelles because of the warpfield or something (now that doesn't make sense with the modified enterprise (wich is as far as i can remember about the only ship with an odd number of nacelles) in All good things, does it ;) )
also, the nacelles are on pylons away from the main bodies, because the warpfield isn't to healthy that close to the warpcoils either
BigglesThe Man Without a Face
The Prometheus had a reason for having 4 nacelles though: It was essentially 3 ships.
Actually, the Miranda's nacelles ARE away from the hull. :p
They are below the main saucer section, and there is no hull or "belly" or anything between them. :D
And if you recall, the Intrepid class' (Voyager) warp engines fold UP for warp-travel! So they are also AWAY from the hull during warp-flight. :p
heh... So there you have it! The Nebula's are on either side of the "belly" so it's not really away from the hull, unless of course, they only project the warp-field bubble OUTSIDE of the ship, and not inside. (Meaning that the little blue strips on the nacelles are only on the OUTSIDE side of the warp engines, and not on the inside ones. Ie: Pointing away from the ship, not towards it.)

What about shuttle craft or runabouts? Their nacelles are on the hull.
I think the "danger" of a warp field has to do with how advanced, how well shielded, and how powerful it is. So in the days of the 1701, they were kept way the hell away from the habitable sections, and they got closer as time and technology moved on.
The Oberth and the Nebula aren't exactly speed demons, so I would say they have underpowered engines to prevent any crewmen being turned inside out or anything by the warp field. Same with the shuttlecraft.
The Defiant has a combination, with the engines being well insulated, fairly advanced, and kind of slow, as well (I think its top speed is in the high 8s, with ships like the Prometheus and Voyager outracing it easily).

If you look at other race's ships, you only can assume that it really has to do something with the technology level (or insulating), as the ferengi marauder, the bird of prey etc. have no nacelles at all, but have their warp-drive inside. (then again, it also could be the power-level with the bird-of-prey, as it's a rather small (a crew of 12 or so) craft....

Tho for some reason, they decided that the old B'Rel (not the K'Vort) class Bird of Preys needed to have folding wings! Go figure.
Heh... Up for landing, middle for cruise-mode, and down for attacking.

Actually, it was explained in the 25th Anniversary Special as the warp nacelles themselves generating a very powerful electrical field, which would kill anyone that got too close. Thats why the nacelles are away from the crew.
As for their location on the Defiant and Oberth classes....we can only assume that they have adequately shielded the decks nearest to the nacelles.
As for the shuttles and runabouts...either the field generated is too weak to be a danger, or they've shielded the cabin somehow.
BigglesThe Man Without a Face
It's also reasonable to assume that nacelle technology has advanced a bit and so they arn't quite as dangerous anymore.

If thats the case, then why not mount them directly onto the hull so they're not as vulnerable to attack?
