    I still don't understand the "ride with the brush forwards" thing. If that is how it's truly done, why has it become so ingrained into legend to ride the other way around? It also seems a tad less aerodynamic.

    Bingo. That's the reason, every fantasywriter/mongrel thinks it's done that way because of aerodynamics and plain logic. The reality is that the broom represents a still version of an enchanted horse, if you like, that can be ridden. Hence, stick horses for the kiddies and the inverse broom.
