Well, China is not the nicest country out there and they do have nuclear weapons. As to getting to space, more power to them. Hopefully it will motivate us to get our asses back into gear. And maybe, just maybe, China will be able to break free and become a democracy (my opinion, not trying to take this off topic!)

Competition is a GOOD thing. At this point in our ecopolitical level we need competition a bit more than cooperation imho

Indeed if anything's a technological catalyst it's either war or competition, the Space race as croxis said, being a prime example.

Right now the US Space Programme REALLY needs a booster shot, and I think this latst turn of events will do it.

ahem. Anyway, the big deal is that china makes the third nation to achieve the level of technology and willpower to send humans to space.

The sad part is willpower is the part we're lacking the most. Imagine where we'd be if we hadn't said after landing on the moon, "Ok we beat the soviets thats good enough.

Throughout the 20th century look how much aviation advanced over any given 40 year period. Imagine if half as much effort and attention went to space program.
