HELP: spybot.worm...

OK,norton is incessant that I have W32.spybot.worm.

heres the problem:

it points to a non-existant file, located in C:\documents and settings\all users\documents\OPEN_ME.exe

that folder is empty. (I have show hidden and system files on)

norton's site says that it adds values to the registry, I don't have those values.
norton says run a full system scan in safemode and delete all files infected. NO files show up as infected.

norton says there will be zero byte files in the startup folder, there are none....

HELP!!! How to I stop this crazy thing?

that might help but i suggest reformating, then burning your computer and burying the ashes, you wont be bothered by that kind a worm again!

I recommend a small nuclear charge placed on the hard drive platter, myself.

I suggest putting a live gopher inside the casing, they tend to eat the worms and inform you of a completed task by smoke signals.

You might try Ad Aware 6.1... It goes through the registry, and might help you get rid of the entry that is making Norton bitch...

Not a sure thing, but worth a try...

Running Spybot Search & Destroy is a great tool against spyware as well.

Call me crazy, but I'd be tempted to make a file of the same name, stick it in the folder, reboot, then delete it.

I really need a more direct way of dealing with windows, but I swear solutions like this get me through far too many of my problems with it

just remember the glory days of 3.1, where I never knew what the word crash meant.
  • BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Nah. You want to go back further, to the great days of DOS 4.2.

3.1 wasn't all that stable actually. Instead of "Illegal Operation" that you got with 9x, it just told you "General Protection Fault: random hex addresses here"

DOS on the other hand is rock solid stable. :) Pity it was so limited.

It's hard to have protection faults when you don't have protected memory. :)

Haha, I went straight from Commodore to Windows 95 (then downgraded, with a 3.1 laptop), then ME, and now XP.

    Well...

    My order of system purchase:

    Amiga 2000
    286 Dos
    386 Dos/Win2
    486 Dos/Win3.1
    486 Dos/Win3.1 (extra comp)
    486 Dos/Win3.1 (laptop)
Amiga 3000 (someone gave us it)
    Pentium Win95
Pentium 2 Win98 (laptop, school comp)
    Pentium 2 Win98 (family comp)
    Pentium 2 Win95 (extra comp)
Pentium 4 (1.3GHz) Win2k (school comp, soon to be family comp)
AMD Athlon (3000+) Win2k (school comp)

    Currently in use:
Amiga 2000, Amiga 3000, Pentium (running Dos/Win3.1 for old games), Pentium 2 (all 3), AMD Athlon.
My parents will be upgrading their comp with my old Pentium 4 when I am home for winter break.
