There have been some other interesting incidents in the past week, such as this "fireball"

which was seen in Wales, thought to be a large meteor burning up in the Earths atmosphere.
And within one hour of the asteroids closest approach to Earth; a meteorite fall in Orissa, Eastern India caused panic among the locals, and possibly some injuries, together with substantial property damage. It's thought by some this may precede another celestial encounter.

I tell you, if that's an unusual aircraft contrail, I pity the people who were onboard said aircraft.

Don't worry, the combined nuclear mega-tonnage of Hercules and Peter the Great is more than sufficient to deal with any threatening asteroid or meteor on a collision course with Earth.

Why is it called a near miss? Wouldn't "near miss" mean hit?
Oh, God, not another subscriber to the George Carlin School of Etymology.
A "near miss" would be a miss that, while not actually hitting, was still near the object that was in danger of being hit, and therefore, had a substantial chance of hitting.
Now, if something "nearly missed", that would mean it hit, but it was only a glancing blow.
Thanks to the hodgepodge nature by which the english language was made, these sorts of odd constructions are all over the place, based primarily on what people thought sounded good at the time. It's a well known fact that English has the most exceptions and special cases out of any language on the earth, and we generally keep from pointing that out for the sake of peace in the family.
Now, if you don't like it, you can speak another language. Perhaps Esperanto would be more to your taste. If you don't want to speak something other than english, kindly stop being an asshole and humor the damn language.
