Don't be so negative!Let's send them a surprise.Does anybody know how to make a bomb?
I used to know one guy. But he sort of went up in flames.
Was this unexpected?
If you're talking about the guy with the bomb, I think he wasn't expecting it.
If you're talking about the game, I think it was pretty much expected. In more than one ways. And more than one reason. 1. it wasn't quite ready or 2. commercial point of view (ofcourse.. if they'd put it out before the holiday seasons, it might get better sell... well, i was in "tietohallinto", not marketting. So I shouldn't say).

I expected a delay announcement about three weeks ago. to wait until 6 days before the supposed release is VERY bad PR...
Was this unexpected?
Nope. My guess is someone wants to release it in a media circus during christmas.
Sheesh. It was a rhetorical question :D
Well, Some people have trouble with sarcasm, I have with rhetorical questions. Ofcourse, usually when I answer that kind of questions they end up more or less insane. Funny that..
a note on game releases..... never beleive release dates people... come on, have learned that by now :) ad at least 4 months to the first release date.
4 months? That's a tad optimistic, isn't it? :)
Sheesh. It was a rhetorical question :D
I agree.

I don't.

Guess I'm the only one that thinks this might have been done because they (Valve) just found a few major bugs that needed to be fixed before the game gets released?
In any event, if this is true then anyone thats interested in the game gets a more stable copy and they get to reap the benefits of holiday shopper madness. Win-Win situation for retailers and customers.
Exactly.
In fact, many Valve employees have said that the game isn't done yet. They're still working on bugs.

Ohhhh SHIT! Me and sam *AGREEING* on something? This can't be good.... ;)
that what Doug Lombardi said in a recent interview from Japan.
in other words, tweeking for NVidia cards, and adding languages. the games done folks, no bugs. just tweeking for other languages and graphics cards....
stupid NVidia...Valve should have just stopped on that one, already spent 5x as long trying to get the FX series to run DX9...
Current development status : Completed. Now is the stage of the system tuning and localization.

Do you have a link to that interview?
I think the key thing here is that the game isn't done. If they're still adding multiple language data and tweaking for video cards, that means it's not done. No interference from Vivendi, just that the game's not done.

Subject: A question
Hi Mr. Newell,
I am like many in the community very exited about hl2 and its delay.
So here my question:
What are you currently doing on the game causing the delay,
or isn't it the game but anything else?
And this was Gabe's response:
We simply aren't finished. It's a very large project.
some peeps at the HL2.net forums translated it for us.
http://www.famitsu.com/game/event/2003/09/28/264,1064735715,16845,0,0.html
the highlights of the interview:
The release date : This holiday season.
The world-wide release : At once (simultaneous release (It's ambiguous that this means the release via Steam.))
Current development status : Completed. Now is the stage of the system tuning and localization.
Localization: The support for 12 languages(English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Japanese etc).
Expansion pack: Lombardi insisted that the expansion will be released in next year.
and gabes mail makes sence....its not done because they are still making it work on NVidia cards, and adding languages. :)
Not quite. Here's another e-mail:

Subject: Localization?
Yes or no.
All you're working on is localization and hardware optimization, then HL2 is finished. Right?

And Gabe's answer:
No.
and then they try covering themselves saing its poor drivers, and well...just bugs me when a companey is that dishonest.
well, when a companey starts a large false advertising campaign, I kinda get that way...

Didn't ATI try the same thing way back when?
Until then, I'll just go on recommending everyone get Radeons.
Actually, NVIDIA doesn't strike me as being dishonest about this. Which isn't to say they're not madly rushing to cover for something, but I'm perfectly willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until new benchmarks come out using both the Detonator 50 driver set and the final game.

I personally think ATI is just a better company. They've beaten nVIDIA as far as I'm concerned, and I lub them.
Did they not sell the product as the first DX9 NVidia card? it being DX( being the key selling point? Look at any review site that uses any DX9 test, beit Tomb Raider AOD, 3DMark, or the HL2 bench, and NVidia simply can't do it. not to mention NVidia cards are not capable of certain effects, such as High Dynamic Range lighting. (Well, not in terms of usability, we're talking single digit FPS here, where ATI cards get 40-50).
its faulty advertsing, And then the drivers...whoo boy, thats a whole nother topic there...
Only thing NVidia has going for it is a fanbase and a little fairy...
BTW: Is that why you sent me the GF3 ?
:D
In any case, EVERY company is plagued by Sales and Marketing groups that go above and beyond reality.
Sierra was no exception back in the day...
One of many reasons we got screwed in regards to B5:Itf ...

Man If I had a couple Million Dollars and Rick's Collar...
