Voice Recordings
Originally posted by LogicSequence @ Mission Collection Thread
actually, be4 the release i was going to ask if u guys thought about adding some basic voice acting in? for at least maybe one of the missions? it might be cool to get a taste of it :). i have a rather deep voice, so reserve me for the "commanding" admiral captain type roles. lol i can also change my voice alot. anyways, just a though ;)
I thought about it and tested it already as I made the X-Mas Collection. For the Gallery I wanted a womens voice, but my favourite "voice girl" (she has a wonderful voice) just comes back at the mid of october.
For the other things we could use our voices. I've made a small project together with BS some days ago.

Yes, we all can at least write in english so we also can speak english ;) . That was only an example, have no english example currently.

For voice recordings you need a good microphone. Otherwise the recordings sounds cheap. I can make the speakings for the Intro of Gallery, Director War, ... . Maybe I can convince my girlfriend to speak for the Gallery Welcome text.
• i also got a mike so i can do something....and my 1st language
is english so that might help....but, i think its ok to throw some
heavy accented voice overs for certain characters, take londo's
voice for example, its english yap but shows some hardness
that distinguishes him....we can try the same :)

also, we can try to follow the species characteristics when
doing their dialogue

for ex:

drazi/narn: aggressive/defiant
centauri: high class/smug
minbari: superior, inquisitive
human: duh
drakk/agents: secretive

so we can try to incorporate these styles into the dialogue :)
if its no good for campaign atleast it would be ok for normal non
mission dialogue when u raid for some cargo or something :)

• Voice Recordings

@P3K: Nice ideas and helpful for the campaign, but for the Mission Collection we only need general speakers b/c I won't get my mission finished until release date.
If you and Logic and who want to make some voice recordings too could post a small example of your speaking then?

Voice example #1: The ships approaching to their destinations. Have patience, please! (narrator style)

Voice example #2: You're grabbing the artifact immediately and run to the Hangar Bay. (narrator style, but chevied)

Format:
Recording: 44.1kHz, Mono
Saving: wav, PCM signed, 16bit, mono (or similar)

Pay attention by recording: The distance between your mouth and the mic should be at least 15-20 cm.

heres my sample....i dont think it sounds good for a captain...
maybe a wingman :) ...but i can work on it....

also i get some hissing which means my mic sucks ...or
i got a bad setup

i think it can be filtered out in cool edit or whatever

• Voice Examples

I've recorded the two examples. I haven't edited it to prevent the original voice. If you make these recordings, too, please don't edit them as well.

You can download them here.

Sounds good for a radio operator on the bridge.
also i get some hissing which means my mic sucks ...or

Like I said, don't come to close with your mouth to the mic. So the hisses won't appear. If it's to quiet then you can easily increase the volume afterwards.
• i believe it is the background noise of my PC ...which is 1 or so meter away .....its not my breath causing it ....but dont worry
i can get rid of that noise......also, i might get my friend who
is a russian guy with that accent to do some voices....hes
a fan of B5 too so it'll help : )))

That's nice for the explorer campaign :) ... but, at first we need text scripts before we can start with voice acting. And before we can write them we need the missions (on scripting a mission you get much additional ideas) -> detailed plot.

I think it would be better that the voice actors won't edit files in any way. If we have one person as voice editor then all voices get the same "treatment". Or if VAs will edit files then there would have to be guidelines what they do so all files are filtered in same way and are comparable (have to be that way when we select VAs for campaign).
• Voice Recordings for Mission Collection

You're right Warlord but such edits like the removing of background noises won't influence the voice.

@Mission Collection: I'll do the narrator speakings for the Mission Collection. For the gallery I'll hire my girlfriend.
• Warlord IIWarlord II Earthforce Officer
But still not everyone knows how to remove background noises. So there still should be instructions on it if we want VA candidates to do that.
• i have a telex Omnidirectional stereoscopic microphone i use to make some recordings a while back. it uses wave principle and quad chamber vibration to eliminate background noise be4 it sends the information to the computer. it's pretty good... should be... damn $100 microphone.... lol... so i know i can make some high quality recordings.

As for eliminating background noise, u'll need a sound editor that has a noise gate feature. this passes the file thru a "gate" and allows only information (sound) above a certain peak to remain in the file.

And on another note, background noise isn't all that bad when u think about it. at least not for starfury pilot voices... we're gonna want to add in some static to the voices anyways to simulate radio communications. so the bground noise may fall away at that point.

Thats right, but for radio communications I recommend to include an own "noise". Btw I'm working with GoldWave so I could do that.
