plane crash in nyc again!

about 15 minutes ago there crashed a plane from american airlines into a shopping street in queens in new york city. there were probably about 250 onboard the plane.
there is, however, no conclusion, that this has been a terrorist attack.
this is really terrible if people cannot feel safe at all.
i only hope...i just dont know what to think
i pray for all the people that lost their lives just a few minutes ago...

Not much to report at the moment... It was an A-300 Airbus with 246 passengers and 9 crew.

Whitnesses reported seeing debris in the air, which indicates that there was trouble in flight.

JFK, Kennedy and Newark airports have been closed.

So far, there has been NO evidence that this was a terrorist attack.

    Thanks samuelk.

So far, this is the theory:

    1) Aircraft took off. While in a climb, an engine failed, and began producing extreme amounts of drag on the one side of the plain.
    2) Torsional forces began causing the plane to pitch downwards and bank, turning it into the ground.
    3) At some point, the failed engine was torn off and hit the ground. I believe this is now assumed to have happened before the plane hit.

Some people say this is a blow to two-engine aircraft. I disagree. The nature of this acccident would have had similar effects on a 747. This is not any normal failure. Rather, the engine simply stops and locks, creating large amounts of drag. A 747 would have gone down, if perhaps just taking a bit longer.
  • So far it looks like an accident from what CNN reports, and after talking to some former co-workers (wink, wink), My guess (that is guess mind you) that it was an accident.

That's mine too. I would say that the engine didn't fail. It jammed. If it had mearly failed it would have windmilled (those things spin at 50,000 rpm, they don't stop instantly). So it must have jammed, which would bring it to a halt rapidly, resulting in the large fan and compressor producing huge amounts of drag. The engine begins to tear off the wing, breaking fuel lines and causing the fire witnessed by many on the ground (that's my guess). The plane, with no power on one side and instead a huge dead wait and drag area, pitches into the ground. Sometime before impact the engine pylon gives way and the engine falls off.

That's my theory. Probably all wrong.

Apparently in was a engine malfunction that caused this

That was disproven when the engines were examined. The current theory is that the tail assembly, for some reason, fell off in part or total, causing the plane to spin out of control, causing enough stress to snap off an engine and eventually the wings. It then took a trip into the ground.

Yep saw that on the news tonight. Apparently when they examined the engines there was no pre-crash damage to indicate failure of any kind. But they did find the tail fin a lot further back than they should have, and in remarkably good condition to.

My first thought was that they had an engine malfunction that sent blade fragments throught the engine housing into the wing, leaking fuel and causing an explosion. But from the current news it sounds more like airframe structural failure. The only problem i have there, is that it was a newer plane.

Yeah, and tail fins don't just fall off.
