as far as the optical sound in... I'm going iRiver I think, easier, no drivers, no bullshit. Now all I need is a copy of protools. :)

I think you're going just a teensy bit overboard with that power supply. You won't need anything over 350W. Just make sure that it's capable of putting out 16A at +12v and you'll be fine.

Aside from that, well, I notice no case mentioned in that list, nor a keyboard or mouse. I'll just assume you meant to leave those out and say that it looks like you've got everything covered.

Except the operating system. You'll need to purchase that, too. If you purchase it simultaneously with a piece of hardware, you should be able to get a significant OEM discount.

I'll never ever buy a Microsoft porduct in my entire life... not ever. I'm sure I'll find an OS to use somehow.. (cough, cough). Besides which, I'll never want for software of any description, one of my best mates is the biggest pirate to ever sail the digital seas... :D

the Case !

har har !

http://www.pccasegear.com.au/prod841.htm

this one

and yeah, keyboard and mouse but those things are so damned ubiquitous and cheap as hell..:)

I get conflicting reports about powersupplies... so I thought I'd go large.... its not like it will use more juice unless I hook more stuff to it, a transformer is a pretty simple device, so I guess big doesnt matter too much... who knows... I might end up with some uber power hungry gear in the extra bays or something so I guess its just 'future proofing'.

anyways... there it all is

ignore Bekken on the power supply! more power is ALWAYS a good thing! even when its electrocuting you!

Seriously though, a large powersupply gives you room to grow, especialy if you plan on adding more devices like DVD burners, more hard drives, all kinds of usb and firewire gizmos.. a laser...

I recommend the Seasonic Super Tornado 400. It's truly silent (thanks to its 120mm fan) and efficiency is about 70-80%.

Or, with this power supply, a small particle accelerator.

DON'T LISTEN TO BIGGLES! I bought a decent power supply, but my PC is far beyond decent; had to upgrade it immediatelly. OK, so I have 8 quad-LED case fans :D, a massive heatsink, case temp display, and some veddy powerful shyte, but more power is definetely a good thing. I might have to upgrade again when I buy a better CD drive (my primary is a 48x32x48, but my secondary is a 4x2x4 we stole from an old junker) and all the tons of glowing goodies I plan on buying... And NewEgg only gives you the option to make up a fake story about how your power supply doesn't work for thirty days, so I would actually have to PAY for my new one. :D

Thanks! At least someone here has a sense of proportion....

Now, after all the other recommendations I made here, I'm not about to say that more power isn't better than less power. But 450W is ludicrously far beyond your power needs, and the cost is nearly double that of a decent 350 watter that would perform just as well with your setup. Add to that that the 450W PS would probably run louder and hotter, and I just don't see any advantage to it.

Re: the case: I likes it. A tad expensive, but I'm intrigued to hear how the soundproofing turns out.
• The power supply is the beating heart of your machine, and voltage ratings can cause a lot of problems, I've had them myself. More power always helps especially when you add drives. Considering that the difference between a 350W and a 480W is around 20 or 30 bucks, I was happy to recommend that SB go with the higher supply. The only waste is when you have to upgrade your PS because you don't have enough power to see all your drives in Windows.

Besides, once you go RAID, you never go back :)

You are absolutely right. Voltage ratings are the primary cause of problems, which is why I recommended above that a proper PS should be able to output at least 16A at +12v (though I personally would go with 17A just to be safe). If you've got that, the rest pretty much takes care of itself.

Thing is, I recently bought a 350 watter that would do the job for close to $50. The difference there is substantially more than $20-$30.
Besides, once you go RAID, you never go back :)
Damn straight!

Ah, well, it's still a perfectly good PS that will most definitely do the job.

I always go by the adage that :

'the memory of the cheap price vapourises under the red hot anger of the current problems, youre having with the cheap ass shit that keep F#$%&# up !'

if in doubt, make it bigger..:D

etc etc

also remember folks I come from a Mac Background... if I went full house with a Mac... the 1700 US I'm up for , for a PC is piddly...so I'm not about to quibble about 20 bucks here and there... as far as I'm concerned I'm 'stealing' this machine from the various vendors...

That is soooo very cool...

If money were no object...

:(
• if money were no object....I'd buy the hologrphic like display....ONLY 22 grand....

and an IPod...something I really want to do is take out my car sterio, but in just a volume/balance/radio/clock in it, and create a quick slide in slot for an Ipod, that would plug in a power and headphone jack to my car, that way I could have 10gigs of music with me, as well as my radio/clock. no need for CDs then! :)

Just out of curiosity, how can you fall off the back of a wheel?
• shadow boxershadow boxer The Finger Painter & Master Ranter
ok... I assume youve seen a wheel balancer at a tyre shop... a big spindle upon which you spin the wheel to see where the wobbles are so you can attach lil ballast weights to get it all balanced ?

if one was using a massive open cut mining truck tyre type one... or one for big tractors or something... where you could comfortably stand upon it...

now if you spin it quickly... to stay on top of it one has to run contrarotationally to stay on top of the wheel... if you stop... you fall off.

computer technology, and technology is metaphorically the wheel...

I stopped upgrading, I fell off the back of the wheel...

Capiche ?

:)

dont forget radars!
• So... what about Quad-LED case fans, cathodes, and Lazer LEDs? Or is this going to be on of those EconoPC jobs? :D
• shadow boxershadow boxer The Finger Painter & Master Ranter
sorry mate I'm not an overwanker/overclocker

I might ditch the stupid plastic feet for some better ones, attach a case handle so I can carry the bitch a little easier, but no serious dayglo, water cooled, trek console guts, for me..:)

perhaps if I get really excited I'll engine turn the front face for sexiness, go for a Ettoire Bugatti look.. :)

I didn't go as crazy as I had planned to... 6 Quad LED case fans is all for now... probably a cathode, some feet, and maybe a Lazer LED or two in the future. I can't wait to get this thing overclocking... Besides my 6 80mm case fans, I've got two 40mm HD coolers, massive heatsink with fan, and a 50-degree PC room. :D
• shadow boxershadow boxer The Finger Painter & Master Ranter
I think my favourite overwanker option is the liquid cooling... with a twist. You can buy UV light reactive dye to put in the water, so if you use clear tubing and a clear coolant/heatsink block you can see the glowing water circulating through your case... I wanna see someone add an airpump/bubbler to the system so you can really see the stuff moving..:D
Originally posted by shadow boxer
overwanker
every time I see "overwanker" I just gotta smile :D

I mean my support for big power supplies is because I end up running alot of crap, 3 hard drives, internal zip drive, firewired powered do-hickies, CD rom, DVD rom, CD burner, so I use the juice.

But the rest of the mod scene? its not my thing, i like my computers beige, or maybe black, since IBMs big RISC cubes are black (and evil looking! its sweet!) maybe Im just showing my age.
• Hah, ever hear of a VapoChill cooling system? When you install one of the better models into your PC, you also have to coat your mobo and everything in plastic, because the water vapor inside your case will turn into frost, and damage your parts otherwise . How sick is that?
• shadow boxershadow boxer The Finger Painter & Master Ranter
I've never really had a problem with proper overclocking... its when things get out of hand and the form far exceeds the function...

so people have these great machines, which run fast/well... ok thats cool, water cooling, massive fans et al...all function and tough machines with quality aluminium cases in most instances.

its the acrylic cases, the UV dayglo plastics, the neons and the l337 laser cut fan grillz and stikahs and crap that I find amusing and to some extent, irritating.

the stuff I do appereciate is the guys who do steampunk type, brass, glass and rosewood cases which look cool, etched brass plaques which call it 'Babbages Advanced Calculation Engine' and huge big 'electric chair' type throw switches etc. For a popular example, the latest version of the Time Machine. Like a computer built by an 1830's craftsman.

Or the 1950's look which is kinda similar but throw in pastel plastic and engine turned aluminium with 'rocket ship' fixtures. The 'Super deluxe Count-a-tron' thing.

The whole cyberpunk/star trek console stuff leaves me cold...

as far as the cooling systems go... I'm suprised some wag hasnt tried the industrial transformer style coolant system, making a massive hollow finned case filled with oil which relies on thermosyphoning to circulate the oil around the case/components... works for 11,000V transformers, why not a computer. Messy when you want to add some Ram or something tho... :)
