Characters thread

hey guys, thought id make my own thread, this is where ill report
my progress and show wips of the heads as i make them

im pretty sure the modelling of minbari girl is done
all geometry adds to 1834 faces

  • Nice! Looks awsome! :) Though ... I'm frightened of the poly count for just a comunication window ... but doesn't matter, fast computersystem aren't that expensive. ;)

    'cause you read our campaign mission scetch: We could need some EA officers/pilots, centauri and shadows.

    would be cool ...like a colage of faces from different species
    and say one fighter beside them : )

    logic said 1500 is ideal so im not too far off....but id really like
    to know if it can be imported to the pso ...i tried to load
    the plugin in lw 5.6 but it didnt work for me : \ ...plus i dont
    know what im doin in that program :D
  • ahh! the converter was in the graphical sdk also....so i converted
    the lwo file to pso ......i didnt see any error messages in the window
    so maybe it was ok....but in lw there was some normals issues
    after the conversion .......

Well at least I made Skirmish GUI look good in 800x600 which I'm mostly using :D. (If you try Indie's GUIs, the windows go partly above each other in 800x600).
  • i forgot to mention that the teeth are also modelled out :)
    so if i wouldve put them on a textured plane, it would cut atleast a few hundred more ....but at the moment i just want to know
    if it can be imported into the game, so i can start pumping out heads :D
  • if it has more than 800 polys (roughly) it will still convert, you just won't see it in the game... it'll be an invisible head :p

    you have LW now right? fix the normals :) select the polygons u want to change, and flip them around (hotkey f). remember tho, if the camera won't see a poly, delete it. if it's something done with 25 poly's, but can be done with 8, do it. just some tips. don't worry about smoothing, taht's all done with LW texturing.

    started on earthforce guy, could be used for any space station
    talking like b5 cmd center or a destroyer :)))

    i have lightwave 5.6 and 6.0 ...but really i can barely friggin
    navigate in it....should i use 6.0 or 5.6 ???? is there any
    improvements in interface/modeller in the newer one?
    or even 6.5 ..but i couldnt find that version yet......so weird
    i cant even pan in the perspective window....and when i do it
    in ortho ...it pans in all windows.....grrrrrrrrrrr :) i hate lw :P j/k

    im scared to open that app now hehe ....my conversion app
    can convert to a 5.6 or 6.0 lw file....i didnt try 6.0 but ill do it this
    time and see if it buggers as much as 5.6 convert....wish i had
    some help on this latter part :\ ....fixing any issues in lw and
    exporting to pso ....

    next ill start on centauri guy....or maybe female ? :) nah hehe

    centauri head done 1191 polys, used the minbari girl as a base :)
    dont think its too noticable but i can change bit more if need be

    whats next? think maybe a starfury pilot .....and we'll use a fake
    reflection on the glass of his helmet so it can be used all the time
    just a couple of diff textures to shake it up will do it :)

  • another question. does the eoc engine support transparency maps ?

    and the normal issues seems to be gone once i opened the file
    in lw 6.0 and not 5.6 ....the faces just had all hard edges...
    is there normals smoothing in the modeller ????

    Sorry I haven't been around to welcome you aboard P3k. I must say these characters look impressive!

    That earthforce guy looks like he could be used as the nightwatch first officer of Magellan. Perhaps a bit too young to be the captain? Although president Clark did prefer fresh blood in Earthforce...

    Any ideas on the head of IPX staff aboard the Magellan?
  • yes actually, i think i will base him on final fantasy: the movie doctor whats his face...the old bald guy ....cant recall his name....but he
    will definitly be old, hmm.....ill add somethin to give him character...like a stylish beard that has some authority in it :)

    in the mean time tho i started on the starfury pilot

    it would mean modelling atleast a few different earth faces
  • what if you would model the alpha leader face,player face and maybe one or two other wingmens face and the others would have that fake reflection?
  • good idea....for some reason the player face didnt come to mind heh...it will be a little challenging to make them all look unique
    towards one another....but its more a matter of time than
    anything else .....but im moving pretty fast anyway, the long
    part will be to texture them all : (
  • hey, yes EOC supports transparency... in a limited fashion. if yer going for the visor on a starfury pilot's helmet, it should be fine. just set the transparency percentage.

    yes, LW has smoothing. Go to the surface editor (top left) that's where you change and edit all of your surfaces.

    Heh, there is only one but: In the current campaign plan, the IPX head of staff is a [I]she[/I].:p Its not hard to change that at this point, but I'd rather keep her since she is our only female cast member. When we had the last campaign chat, we figured her character should resemble the IPX lady in Thirdspace: determined and ambitious to the extereme.

    new characters until i start playing with these ones and try
    putting them in the game.....and i guess trying to make one
    into a ship like logic said, altho im clueless still :)
  • lightwave questions:

    is there a uv 'snapshot' where i can save
    a picture of the uv as a image to paint in photoshop ???
    or do i have to make a print screen :)

    also, how do i apply a surface material to an object and
    make the texture show in perspective window ?

  • i felt like doing a narn....so here he is : ) pretty simple ...half
    an hour of editing human face :) ...gotta work on the suit

    what next ? ipx lady and captain .....is the captain human?
    maybe we can use the narn for that role

    after those ill do the psi corp guy
    what else after that ? raiders ? do they communicate ?
    probably atleast 1 more centauri for the 1st/2nd mission
    for the cruiser....mmm ...cant think of more atm

    These are absolutely gorgeus. Btw, the Narn mission include a space shrine built by the aliens for their narn "gods". Your narn head could be used as a part of that. Just give it an asteroid texture so that it looks like its been carved out of rock.

    Any luck in getting them to replace the ingame faces? If all else fails we can always make renderings of movies out of them and put them into the database in personnel files -section.
  • yeah i could probably do the narn head, as for putting it ingame
    im still way off that, i cant even seem to convert the files properly
    from lightwave to pso because of my crappy lw6.0 version....
    the geometry converts but the textures dont for whichever reason,
    altho this process works for logic

    and it doesnt seem like i can get my hands on 6.5 anytime soon :(
    i am learning little by little tho, and the gizmo plugin seems to have
    loaded into lw6, anyway im still trying to wrap my head around this stuff but with logic's help it should work,

    at first i tried just replacing clay's files with my own but that was wishful
    thinking :) and there was nothing while he talked except the bg

    and theres more problems up ahead im sure, because ive no idea
    how to combine the scenes after in eoc, since one pso file can only have
    800 polys or less, with every character is split into atleast 2 files
    it seems tough to me...especially if there would be any animation
    on it
  • I'll post these P3k's characters in case if somebody has the time to finnish them
