I am so fucking angry, I am just seething right now.   Ok, you know how we got a new laptop from alienware (over 2500 dollars). Yes, well get this. I buy Madden 2004, install it on the laptop, finishes installing, and bam. Error messages fucking everywhere. I close everything and do a restart (so I can try to diagnose if there really is a problem). Get this. After coming up with the writing which tells you some of your systems specs (hit F2 to enter setup, ect). I get this.

Disk read error. Press any key to restart. Fuck. Cant do a fucking thing. IT happens every time. So Im pissed, but I do what I have to and delete the partition through the XP cd which came with the laptop, then repartition and reinstall XP Pro. During the installation I get errors that say: File not found- retry, continue, abort type of thing) hit retry, wont work- so I abort, do the whole thing over and try installing windows again (hoping I wont get errors). Get the same fucking thing. Hit continue without having the file. Ok, so windows gets installed, and takes me a few hours to get the damn drivers reinstalled. Then install three things (this is after I run windows update to get everything updated- including directx): ZoneAlarm, GetRight, and AVG Virus Scanner. Ok, sounds good, I do the requested restart after AVG installs. Then bam- laptop is loading, windows comes up, blue scree with white writing which disappears within a second at the most. Restarts the computer. Fucking A.

So now I dont know what to do. The only thing I can figure is the damn XP CD is scratched (not visibly, but you know how that shit is). So now I dont know what to do. I guess I will try to get in contact with Alienware tommorow (after my dad goes out of town, because I am not looking forward to explaining how a fucking 30$ game fucked the 3000$ laptop). Now understand, this is not anything to do with the laptop that I can figure (except for maybe the faulty disk). Its madden. IT has to be. As soon as it was installed I started having the problems. HAd the damn laptop for a month, no problems. Install this one game and the whole thing goes to hell.

So I apologize, I just needed to vent big time. Fucking EA. But please if you have any suggestions as to what to do, let me know. I just dont know. I really dont want to do the same shit again (repartion, reinstall) especailly if the disk is indeed screwed. I have a Gateway XP pro disk, but its worthless because there is no way to reformat or anything like that. Please help before I go burn EA to the ground...

Could be a bad sector on the HDD. Could, if you're connected to the internet without a firewall, be the Blaster worm, though not likely if you killed the partition.

If there's a bad sector which hadn't been written to yet, the install of Madden may have found it and started the file corruption. I'll leave any editorializing on installing Madden strictly alone.

I second the above opinion, sounds like you've trod on a landmine type bad hard drive sector. No ammount of re-installing a stuffing around will fix that.

If it is a bad sector you of course have two choices - replace the HDD (warranty or otherwise) - or reformat the drive and let the puter put up signs around the bad sector saying "Abandon all hope, yea who enter here."

Only a bad sector or some other truly terminal thing would likely cause you 'puters symptoms.

If you've still got warranty... new drive, no question.

I concur. It isn't the game's fault, you just need a replacement HDD.

I agree (Even though i dont know whats going on)

But i do feel your pain, when something that expensive and that new starts blowing up its annoying to sa y the least.

It's definitely not the game's fault.

it could also be caused by one of the new viruses that are out, luvsan, etc... even if u have the best virus protection, i.e. norton, things can still get by. try going to norton's website and running their free virus scan.

Alternitavely, sometimes it may be a software problem, and not neccessarily a bad HDD. Try starting windows in safe mode and running a full scandisk to check for bad sectors, this will take some time, esp if u have a large HDD. i'd try that and see if it reports any bad sectors... scandisk is a magical tool ;) it can sometime fix the worst of problems....

Now on the extreme side, be4 u go mail ordering that replacement HDD, format the hard drive COMPLETELY, and try reinstalling windows. u'll loose all yer data, but it may fix the problem.

NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER partition a hard drive.. it is nothing but trouble! i garuntee you that. i've had more people coming to me with problems caused by partitioned hard drives than i can remeber... take my word on this... i do this for a living (fixing computers i mean).

if all those steps don't work, THEN i'd agree and say it's time for a new HDD.... but defintely try these things be4 u think the worst. if u need help with anything, email me LogicSequence@aol.com.

    P.S.
just so u know, i own my own computer repair company here in my town, so i do have experience with these things ;)

There's very little doubt in my mind that it's a hard drive problem.

Thanks for all of your help, the damn thing better still be under warrenty. Only had it 3 months. ACtually, what you say makes alot of sense. I will contact Alienware ASAP and tell them what I need.

Oh, and I did do a full reformat- lost everything. I only repartitioned because I had to, no other method would work. Well, let me see what Alienware's hours are for tech support... Thanks again, you guys make me feel alot better- because the thing is still under warrenty and will be fixed shortly (I hope).
  • Well you can always do this if that falls through.
  • SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
    Well, there may be hope.

Google up a program called "PC Inspector"
it's freeware, and it can recover files lost in a format. I used it last week to recover 20 gigs of logs from a server which had a partition mysteriously corrupt itself unrepairably.
