• lol, they must've showed the photos of millions of people walking across Brooklyn Bridge (subways are down) six hundred times in the five minutes of news I watched, while the guy talking repeated over and over again that terrorists were not believed to be the cause.

By the way, my Counter-Strike friend from NY just IMed me and told me he has power (obvously), so it's at least partially taken care of.

Hope anyone in the area (not just NY, it went all the way from NYC, through CT, VT, NY, MI and the north of all the states below MI, all the way up beyond Toronto and Ontario, from what I saw.) is alright.

Power Just came back online, As you can see. AND IT WAS THE 4 MOST BORING HOURS OF MY LIFE, NO TV, NO NET. The only thing I had was a small Radio taht was working. Well at least it kept me upto date.

BTW: The cable is out Still out.

What I know from Listiening to the Radio.

over 9000 KM^2 where affected

The Problem Started some where in New York State.

actually no one OFFICIALLY knows yet where it started, some say canada, some NY. Canada says there was a lightening strike at the niagra plant (US SIDE), the niagra plant denies it, saying there is no equipment damage there.

the areas affected are: ohio, michigan, new york, new jersey, maryland, massachusetts, conneticuit, philidelphia, Vermont, southern canada (toronto, ottowa). 9 Nuclear plants were shut down. at the height of the problem, 50 million people were without power. at this hour, 10pm EST, the power is slowly coming back on. there is no evidence of terrorist activity. And our elustrious president took the opportunity to do some campaigning and say "i told ya so" about upgrading the power grid.

Jeeze. Read a book, write a story, draw a picture, go for a walk, take a nap, do something. If anything as mundane as a four-hour power outage is enough to get you bored enough to complain about it to the world, you need to find some other pasttimes. Four hours is a cakewalk.

Now, if you complained about it being increadably hot because it was in the dead of summer with no air conditioning, then I would have some simpathy. But, yeesh, complaining about being bored because of no TV. This world.
• Rogue TraderRogue Trader Somebody stop him...
no even reading can be boring due to the heat.

When i went to NJ and visited my family we went to our shorehouse, where our darn power was repeatedly going out. (there 10 days total of 4 with power) Even though i had a book, reading in that heat is hard. Power Outages are boring and tough.

Wish em all some ice cold beer. lots of it.

4 hours? Is that all? I can think of dozens of ways to fill in that amount of time, starting with reading one of the many books I've got lined up to read, followed by doing some study, and if I got really desperate, I'd fire up the laptop and read a few research papers.

Ive done 20 hours in a greyhound bus terminal...(in total over a few days)

YOU my friend have no idea what boredom is..:)

And I hope Sanfam's doing ok... him being a NeoYorkie, (well sort of).

If anyone is to suffer technolgical withdrawl, its him..:)

I can't read books in the midle of the day, I don't know why. If the power is out I usually call a friend or something to talk to. But here where I live, the power is allways back within 1 hour.

Heard about this when I came to work this morning, was nothing about it on the news here in the UK at breakfast. Wow what a blackout! Really goes to show how much we rely on electricity.

I was told by an american person that the blackouts in California were deliberate. The power companies kept doing it to drive the price of electricity up. Don't know how accurate that statement was.
• Cali's having an energy crisis. All the damn fools are using too much air conditioning.

And none of you have the right to complain. My power went out for 6 straight days a couple years ago! During the winter! We were all sleeping in the living room around our fireplace, roasting hot dogs for lunch and dinner. I had to read by candlelight!

none of us have the right to complain, at least we can have electricity. Unlike canadians, still using muskets and fire. :D

He strikes me as the kind of person that would
A: Have many tech items with a seperate powersource
B: Would go though 256 megs of space on his Digital Camera taking pictures over a 4 hour period
C: Plug in his earphones to his CDplayer, head out with his Camera, PDA, and laptop, find a bench, take pictures, download to PC, have fun giving people moustaches in photoshop, relize the powers back on, and head inside.

lol, Photoshop is funneh.
• Over here in Toronto's east end power was down for almost 24 hours. Too dark to read or write... god that was booring. Just came back a little while ago.. but from what I've heard it might just be temporary. More boredom, and I've got an exam to study for

Of course it could be worse: a friend of mine was unlucky enough to be stuck in an apartment building with no water, no candles, and only one flashlight

On the other hand, it was intriguing to see the normally homicidal Toronto drivers actually *not* get into any accidents

The Power here came back on around 9 pm. But as I said its being going off and on. They say it will be like that Untill they get the Nuclear Reactors Back online.

BTW: I have more Books, But they are in PDF format on my computer, I could have Brushed up on Quantam Theory.

• Captain,SimmondsCaptain,Simmonds Trainee trainee
I got out before the moon came up. You could see a Shit load of Stars.

BTW: I dont have to walk very far in order to see a full nights sky;)

That could have something to do with the temperatures in the 100s (F). Try to tell the estimated 3000 French who died in the past few weeks due to the heat and no air conditioning. So, in a way, air conditioning is a necissity during the summer.
• I was on vacation in Lake George when the power went out. Of course I didn't know at the time because I was touring Fort Ticonderoga. My family and I didn't realize anything was wrong till an hour later when we got back to Lake George and saw all the stores were dark. Power came back there around 8:30. When I got home today however we still didn't have power in my town in Bergen County NJ. It came back up around 5PM. Before it came back however I really didn't miss it. I gave my car a much needed wash, got the lawn done, and then just sat in the backyard reading. It was surprisingly relaxing, and a nice change of pace.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Even though I live in a city where light polution isn't so bad that you can only see 5 stars, I still make regular trips to places where I can see the whole galaxy, plus a couple of others.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
I actually really enjoyed the outage. Power came back 'round noon here, but the internet was out until 4 or 5. Anyway, What did I do last night? I talked to my friends, I went out and shopped in the remaining open stores, and following that, I went home for a while.

Then, for a time, I watched the incredibly chaotic driving as people tried their best to play traffic light. I found it amusing to note that, beore the cops and random people (Including my boss) volunteering as traffic directors, some people had a system going where they flashed their hazard lights to indicate a switch in traffic pattern/right of way (Someone was good enough to put a few signs up asking people to try it).

Of course, terror fears were abound. "My phone's not working. Something's wrong." "This is just like 9-11." "It's got to be caused by a terrorist" "Only a terrorist could create this carnage" (Funny, because there were no deaths, and only one accident (someone backed into a car behind them while parallel parking))

Also interesting, I happened to meet so many random peope wandering around town. It was pretty interesting, but so many people were just so much less stuck up or assholish that day. People said "Hi!", waved, or just were polite. Contrary to what would be imagined, things were actually rather nice. It was a side of this town I've never before seen. The rich kids, of course, had all jumped ship and run for the hills ages ago.
"What's this? No airconditioning? No power? NO CELL PHONES?!?! Oh no! What will we do?"

Following that, the car had 3/4 a tank of gas, so I went out to town, and took photos of everything.

It was absolutely beautiful out there. I almost wish things had stayed like that for longer. This area was never so peaceful. It's always got noisy roads and bright, amber lights pointing at the road and reflecting skywards. It totally blots out the sky, exception being a few major constellations on a good day, and the moon. If the moon is up in the sky, there's nothing at all. Maybe a planet, but nothing more.

Last night, for only a few minutes (Moon rose, full force), I got to see what my mother did, which was a sky full of stars. I didn't take a photo, because I was just standing outside, staring at the sky, but it was just so beautiful. I really wonder how people can trade bright highway lighting for such a view.

Town was also amazing. If you think you know where you live, try it without lights. It has a totally unique feel. Never before did it seem so small. The only lights I could see were those from the power plant, the police car down the road (who was lighting the major intersection), and the moon. Of course, my handy LED flashlight was always there, still running strong after over 10 months of constant use (Same batteries). I walked up and down the streets, then drove my way across the major stretches to the harbor, the only light there being the halesite fire house in the background.

I'll post some pictures later, but, I'm not shocked to learn that many just didn't come out bright enough. The moon simply can't replace photographic lighting. I had lots of fun experimenting with the two flashlights and seeing what lighting effects I could create using them with the moon and the occasional traffic.

Plain and simple, I had lots of fun yesterday. I really wish it had lasted longer, even if at the cost of the world as we know it (For a while). I don't know why, but this stuff should happen more often. I can't say I've ever enjoyed a day as much as I did that, but it certainly ranks up there. All I had was a car (With just enough gas to get around) and digital camera.

And of course, nothing beats seeing my boss go out into the street, wrapped in business clothes and garlic knots in hand, directing traffic.

Pics coming soon (Including my boss)

For all those complaining about light pollution, have a look here:

http://www.discover.com/July_03/featlights.html

Personally, I couldn't live somewhere where I couldn't get to somewhere where I can see the galaxy quickly. :)

I remember walking around the CBD here a few years ago when there was a massive summer-long power outage (I mean summer long, it went on for at least a couple of months). It was amazingly peaceful. The only other time that has come close was when I was in town early on Anzac Day last year. The place was deserted. It was great.
• Man sanfam, to bad you couldn't have made it down this summer...
you would have looked up and said "WoW"

no traffic lights, most household lights off by 10, nearest "city" is 4 miles away, and consist of three traffic lights. ;)

Glad you made it out OK though. :)
