this is new, windows shutting itself down..

OK, I have NO idea why this is happening.

It started on my Moms PC, and mine, JUST after a format and got windows installed, did the same thing

a windows dialouge pops up saying something about a network connection, and an NT server, and then says that due to an error, windows will shut down. You get 60 seconds, then the PC restarts.

If/When it happens again, I'll get a screenshot. (60 seconds should be enough time)

Standalone or Network ???

Is the PC a Standalone or is the PC embedded in a network ???

with best Regards

Chicky
• both are standalone PCs, seperate rooms, nothing connecting them. They use the same Internet account though. (56K dialup, server is Atlantic net

funny, something similar happened to my friends pc the other night. it would boot up and then say error about incorrect password and then reboot, it would do this in a constant loop and wouldn't even allow one into safe mode.

I've gotten that error myself a few times, though I do not know what's causing it as even event viewer only gives the little tid-bit of info that the error messege gives. HOWEVER.. I did notice a pattern. Usually when I got the error I was in the middle of a game and my computer lost it's connection to my ISP and somehow ran into a problem trying to re-connect causing it to freak. Dunno what could be causing it and I just re-installed my OS so I dunno.

Is it perhaps that your pc is set up to automatically dial in to your 56k connection? That kinda sorta might have something to do with yours, A2597. AS to you Cpt Simmonds, I have come to the conclusion that the world does not like you. ;)
• Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
My PC shuts itself down every once in a while without any error messages or anything. It just shuts down completely.

I guess it's getting into retirement age. Well... I hope it lasts long enough so I wont have any use for it.

I think you may all be, as Bekenn pointed out, victims of an RPC exploit.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
I had that happen back in the day once. Applied a fix, and it never happened again. :D

One more vote for Exploit.

My university got hit by the blaster worm yesterday. It was halirious. :)
All the windows computers throughout the university were happily trying to infect one another, while us postgrads and the staff of our department just sat there and laughed, cause we were all running linux. :D
• Linux isn't as popular, so it's not worth virusing. Take that grin smiley and... do something dispicably painful to it. You bad person you.
• Captain,SimmondsCaptain,Simmonds Trainee trainee
I'm thinking of using Linux on my next system.
• Many people get it since they leave their ports open on their routers(135 for this worm). Why, I have no clue. That is the first thing I lock up and then run zone alarm.

Plus, writing viruses for Windows is as easy as pie, especially given that Windows users have such lax updating regimens. Has anyone else noticed how often this scenario has played out?

Step 1: Microsoft announces a critical security that no one had noticed to the world, including exactly how a nefarious person could exploit it. Given that none of the persons who would exploit it had found it, this is akin to opening the gates of the prison and leaving high performance getaway cars in the parking lot with the keys in the ignition and a full tank of gas. In Microsoft's defense, though, the couple the announcement with a patch that protects against that security flaw.

Step 2: Weeks/Months/Years after step 1, a virus exploiting the security flaw from step 1 is released. Since all of five people on Windows bothered to install the patch, the virus wreaks havoc on the world. Macintosh, Linux, and othersuch users laugh their asses off.

Additionally, the Blaster worm had a very special message for Microsoft that warmed the cockles of my heart. I would go so far to say that it warmed the shit out of my cockles. As a matter of fact, my cockles are burning.

Ahem.

Anyway...

You see... this is primarily the reason I hate macs... a lot of their users seem to fall under the category of "Elitist pricks"

But how can you play those games when your computer is breaking down because of every little virus in existance?

Heck, the last virus to really impact Mac users was the Autostart worm of the late '90s. The last virus to really impact Windows users was the Blaster worm of, um, yesterday.

This reminds me of the "American stereotype of Britain" thing. British people do speak weird (:D Morden), but not nearly as much as we seem to believe.
In my 9+ years of using Windows, surfing the internet, and (more recently) filesharing, not once have I gotten a virus, unless you count my sister. Well, I did get one, back when I used 95, that caused a birthday reminder for "David" to pop up when I opened Word. Took all of .005 seconds to remove. I have a friend who gets at least one a month, but it's because he opens attachments on emails (Ya think he'd learn... ), downloads suspicious files on Kazaa, and just generally does stupid things. If your IQ is greater than that of the Common Bagel, you can probably avoid most viruses.
I mean, seriously, for a while I got an email from some guy everyday with a 2kb attachment called "cat.exe"; the email said "Please play my game!" That's about how complex 99% of viruses are. I use Hotmail so I only open emails I know to be from friends, and I only open attachments if I know they sent them, while my family uses this MailWasher program that detects all viruses within 6 miles of our PC. I could go on and on about the simple precautions that can pretty much ensure you won't get a virus that I use, but I won't. I know someone will counter with "Well with my MAC I don't have to worry!," so I'll say up front, neither do I.

The only problem I have playing games is that Jedi Knight II is missing a file or two that is required to allow playing, and Un/Reinstallation. I can't remove the game because of this, and I can't reinstall it because it still registers the game as existing. Using Add/Remove programs gives me an error. I don't have proof, but judging by her track record, I think it's safe to pin that on my sister.
