Joe Davis, you have been... terminated

Well, today in the great state of California Arnold Schwartzenegar announced he is going to run for governor in our recall election against Davis (the guy who fucked us over big time- sorry, thats the only way to say it). So I was curious what any of you think about it, especially if you are from California.
Now I am not old enough to vote (few more years yet), but if I could I think I would definately vote to recall Davis and probably vote FOR Schwartzenager. Now, I hope I dont need to tell you why we need to get that worthless SOB davis out of office. As for Schwartzenegger (or however you spell it), I think he will win for several reasons. First he has name recognition, which will be imperative in an election likely to have almost 100 candadites. Second, I think he will appeal to moderates with his stances on the issues.
But to sum up, I like what Schwartzeneger has said, and I hope that he surrounds himself with excellent advisors, which is a key thing if he wants to have any success. Enough of my ramblings, what are your opinions?

So, you're assuming that the entire rest of the world hangs on every bit of news about Californian politics?
and on Arnie himself... hell... you've had Reagan for president... and also named an aircraft carrier after him...
Arnie is small taters... what a shame he cant go all the way to the Oval Office... now THAT would be interesting..:D
Fight of the millennium. ;)
(On the Tonight Show with Jay Leno...)
Yah too bad Arnie can't go all the way to White House (stupid Constitution).
To quote Dr. Emmit Brown: Ronald Reagan, the actor!?!?
Actually, I'd love to hear some reasons. I used to live in CA, but moved out here to Maryland relatively soon after Davis got elected. We've been getting news of the recall out here, but I've yet to hear details on exactly HOW Davis has been doing such a poor job as governor as to warrant a recall.
So, why does CA need to get him out of office?

two words education & bankruptcy. Teachers hate Davis with a passion at least the ones I know. That & the fact that there has been huge dept problems with him in office.
Also its not really that werid considering who and what he does.
Gray davis has bankrupt the state, 30 billion deficit for starters, and many blame him for the energy crisis that has almost crippled that state.
Dont forget silicon valley is in Cali, and if they are having energy problems the world blows up.

Because he's a dick...
now... a rather funny satire news-show started up a petition saying that Stockwell Day should change his name to Doris Day.
a good million people signed that.
and his name is still Stockwell Day :p
If I was a Californian, he'd have my vote! :)
Regards,
Morden
However at least California has a budget. My state of Oregon STILL doesn't have one. And our biggest school district has the shortest school year in the nation......
Ok, here's my take on this: you voted him in, so now you're stuck with him.
Like hell I did!

A popular majority voted him in. I didn't mean "YOU" you. My point was that like it or not he was elected fairly and unless he has done something illegal nothing should be done. (Aside from making sure you get enough people to NOT vote for him next time.) It's called "democracy"... ;)
The repugs are not taking into account the damage this recall electio will do. It sets a precedent which could lead to every election being recalled (at least in the 18 states with such stupid provisions) when somebody with enough cash to bankroll a massive ad campaign wants a change. This could lead to unending electioneering and even less actual governing being done.
Here's an idea from Bill Maher: Only let those who voted last time vote in the recall election. The rest of the residents obviously didn't care enough, so why should they get a voice now?
For our non-American friends, does your political process allow the public to pull a person from office before their term expires?
Ok, here's my take on this: you voted him in, so now you're stuck with him. Unless he's stealing money or making kiddie porn, there's nothing you should be able to do about it. (Except vote him out in the next election.) Moreover, it only took 5% of the voters in the state to get a recall vote. You could get 5% of people anywhere to vote on anything. Now, I'm not saying he's a good govenor but if he's not doing anything illegal a small percentage of the population should not be determining who gets put into office 9 months after the election.
Actualy, its called direct democracy, and thats how it works.. you cant say bad things about democracy can you?! ;)
First of all actualy it takes 5% to have a recall vote, then the recall has to pass by 50% +1 vote, THEN you have another gubantorial election.
At least thats how it works in oregon. Most Western states have recall, it keeps our politicians on their toes.
You can thank the state of Oregon for developing the Recall system ;-)
However at least California has a budget. My state of Oregon STILL doesn't have one. And our biggest school district has the shortest school year in the nation......
my problem is our school districts are running out of money, yet were paying over 10,000 dollars per student, and thats a conservative estimate, frankly alot of that money isnt ending up where is should be, and we need to fix that.
We cant exactly raise taxes considering weve already got over 10% unemployment, the states stroking the figures abit, but were probably at 17%, frankly we need to break the PERS contracts, and do some other things, and the state goverments gonna have to take some ugly cuts, because well, you cant squeeze blood out of a turnip, and most the states already doing piss poor.
Gonna have to kill the oregon medical plan too, which sucks since its my only medical coverage :( but again, where else can we get the massive amount of money we need? the shortfall has added up to be a billion dollars, and everybody with money has safely relocated most of their assests out of state.

And if 50% plus one of the voting population decide they think he stinks, they can get rid of him, thats "Democracy" I think your thinking more along the lines of a constitutional representative republic.
Why is all of California pissed. Four words: 38 billion dollar debt. In addition to this, he has tripled the car tax (the tax you pay to get registration- meaning a new car costs about at least 1000 dollars to register). Someone mentioned that we have a budget? Yea, well that is a budget that is illegal as hell. For one thing, the tripling of the car tax is bordering illegal. Second, borrowing the amount of money that is planned is illegal. The budget is worthless, it cuts education to the legal minimum, and doesnt really solve any problems- just puts off the debt for later.
What did Davis do to deserve a recall? WEll, to start with during his election campaing he lied to us about how large the debt was- said it was something like 20 billion (cant really remember exactly). A month after he is in office, he says: oh yea, I forgot to mention it, but the debt has suddenly almost doubled to 38 billion dollars.
To those who say that we elected him, so we should have to deal with him. Well, see thats all nice and well, but we cannot afford to keep him in office. Davis can no longer build a coalition- he has no respect. The republicans will not talk to him, the democrats have lost respect for him, and he has less than a 30 percent approval rating (somewhere around 26% I believe). Why did we reelect him (well, I guess I should say certain parts of the CA people)? First, the republican party put Simple Simon on the ballot, after Davis used what can only be discribed as Clintonian tactics making sure that Richard Riordan (a moderate) got knocked out of the primaries. Davis than proceeded to dig up alot of shit on Simon, made him look like an idiot, and he was (is) too far to the right to win in california. The recall has been in our CA constitution for almost 96 years I believe (something in that area) and does indeed require a 50% +1 vote to recall the governor. Then, if the recall measure passes, it goes into the second stage, where a replacement is put in. (both votes are on the same ballot, but the second part doesnt kick in if the first fails).
Some people say this sets an awful precedent? Well, it has been in place for a long time and almost every governor has faced a recall drive- however, we have never had a governor so hated by the people.
Couple of other problems in the state of california, in case you are still reading this by now :D
1) A major problem is workers compensation, which is driving out employers (and hence hurting the economy incredably) becasue it is sooo much more expensive than other states.
2) A few years ago we had a referendum that limited the number of terms of our congressmen. While it kinda cleaned things out, it left noone experianced to run the government. All of our congressman have no experiance in governing, and by the time they get really profecient, they have to leave.
Well, I am tired and need some sleep. However, if you have more questions feel free to ask, Ill try to get back to you.
P.S. Arnie cant run for President, Constitution requires a natural born citizen in order to become president.

I say Oregon becomes a nation, then we can have our own currency and we would be rich! I was quite angery, last year i had to go to the district office for something or other (I had graduated), and it was such a nice place! Air Conditioning! Nice Paint Job! Some VERY expencive headsets for the secritaries! And how many students are we stuffing into classrooms? 50? Hmmm. There is a lot of admisistrative BS that can so be cut in the school system (in the government too).
BTW Interested in participation in a Babylon 5 RPG?

Not in the movie Demolition Man "A law is passed because of his enormous popularity & he becomes America's last president."

Oh, yeah, that's good. "A law is passed"? It would take a Constitutional Amendment, which is a hell of a lot harder to get than a simple law.
That's also common knowledge, which is why a lot of Hollywood should just stay away from politics.
Sounds like California's political system is designed for this type of situation, so I withdraw my earlier statements and say kick the bum out (if that's what the simple majority decides ;))
