A2597 and I, Lan Problems...

We may both just be stupid but I have a Cable modem and we tried plugging them together with that but it said "network cable is unplugged" so we thought it was incorrect wire (it has all 8 or so wires in it as opposed to the normal 4?) so I went and got a standard wire... We plugged them in today and it still said so, we messed with settings, made sure same workgroup, then since he was using card and I a onboard one we used a card one for mine thinking maybe the built in one was POS. Still no avail... Any of you tech's know what we can do to get this working...

:D We really want to play SS2, UT2k3, Unreal, WoT, Treadmarks, JKII: Jedi Outcast, Freelancer, and half-life :D

Try checking your firewalls. I got the same message when I forgot that my firewall blocked the conection.

Could you elaborate on the network config? Maybe draw a diagram? I'm a bit confused.

i.e.

My network consts of the following:
Cable Modem
|
|-Router
|-PC01
|-PC01
|-PC03
|-Server
|-Wireless Access Point
|-MiniSanfam
|-EmoryiBook
|-SciFiBook
|-EmoryBusiness
|-OldServer

|-Switch01
|-Harvey
|-Switch02
|-Family
|-IMTerminal
that good enough?
hehe
direct PC to PC though LAN wire.
however neither of our PCs seem to detect that the cable is even plugged in....
(Usually it knows that a connection has been established, even when it can't find the other PC)

As was worked out over ICQ, you simply need a crossover cable. Right now, you're using straight through cables, which don't do the job. Crossover cables swap the TX/RX leads on one end, doing what a hub would normally do automatically.

OOOh! I knew that! I thought they somehow used the modem as a hub. If you want a nice long crossover cable, buy mine, it's 15m long!

That's what I was wondering, yeah. :D
• Yeah definately a crossover cable is needed.

Unless they get a HUB!

Or a switch. :)

or WLAN.

Regular 4-wire cables? You mean telephone cable? You can't use RJ-11 (4 conductor) wire for an RJ-45 (8wire) connection.

A crossover cable would work for you guys, but with the very low prices for switches these days, why bother? Get a cheap 4-port switch (similar to a hub, but with more intelligent network traffic control) and get more friends to join the gaming!
