Well...
Blender is THE BEST modeling program out there, however it DOES have limitations in its capabilitys.
However, users of both LW and Max, and yes, Maya, have all said that Blender is the EASIEST program to model in.

well, to get back on topic ;)
i learned from my mistakes and took another shot, this time i rigged the model so the lights would always burn, and i used a (sorta) black background.
i tried to modify the image so it looks kinda like a TV-screencap

Something I think should have been suggested earlier...
Macro focus mode will fix the blurring due to proximity. Just about any modern camera will have a button with a icon that looks like a flower, or something. Using that allows the camera to focus effectively on close objects.

I was thinking about using it, but never actually tried... dunno why...
though i might add that i did blur the ship additionally in photoshop, to make it look more like it was a bit in motion, and to add to the unsharp-tv feel...
