ILM, here i come !

RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
did my first "model-effects-shot" today ;)

though i wasn't smart enough to take the foto on a decent background. stupid me put the model on my chair ;)
here's the original modelshot (unmodified):

and the model itself (It's a ~7-10 years old light-and-sound-model)

hadn't time to do much work on the background (too hungry)

edit: doh... stupid me linked the same pic twice

nah, i'm not good at lighting etc., my pics usually suck ;)

Somebody give that person Lightwave 3D!

:p

MAX is the way to go.

Hey, don't knock models. They're still the best way to get the most realistic looking shots.
Did you know that the Roger Young from Starship Troopers is 18 feet long? I'd love to have that sitting in my lounge.
• RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
yep, the ILM model for the Rodger Young was huge, but they only did one sequence for the movie (I think it was the bug meteorite, have to put in the dvd to check that ;) ).
Though I'd probably also settle with their Enterprise A or E model ;)
• WHYWHY Elite Ranger
the Rodger Young is still one of the coolest looking Sci-fi capship models of all time...

too bad you only ever see them getting blown up...

Lightwave is the better software. while max may have a more user friendly interface, lightwave is more powerful, and can do many many more things that max can. lightwave is definately the better of the two.
• RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
IMHO MAX is much better suited for modelling stuff
• LogicSequenceLogicSequence Elite Ranger
oh no no, not at all... lightwave is sooo much more powerful... things that would take hours in max take seconds in lightwave, there are so many more tools available. it's just...well better than MAX IMO.
• Captain,SimmondsCaptain,Simmonds Trainee trainee
I use to use Lightwave 6 Back in my SFC Modeling days.

But then I switched over to MAX. I found MAX to be much better for Modeling stuff in, and the user was much more better.

i pity u then, u gave up alot of power :)
• RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
i hate it when my posts get lost..

give examples, maybe you'll convert me to using LW ;)

Nice work!

Hmm, that is one of the few ships I didnt get. I have the Enterprise-D, Romulan Warbird, Borg Cube and the Klingon Bird of Prey.

Worf
• RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
I've got the Ent-D and Warbird too, but also got the Shuttlecraft that you could use with the action figures ;)
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Heh. I have a runabout, the NCC 1701 Enterprise-Nill (Interestingly enough, with stickers that say Enterprise-D), a Bird of Prey, a Transporter playset (The coolest toy EVER), and a bridge playset. I really wanted the engineering set, though. It had a warp core, and a console that made nifty noises... I aso remember really wanting that shuttlecraft. I always loved the design, and thought it would be so nifty to get it! :D

*sigh*

The golden age of trek toys has passed...

To quote Dr. Evil:

"Don't go there, Girlfriend."

Lightwave eats Max for breakfast. Actually, it's more of a pre-breakfast appetizer.

Example? Seasons 1-5 of B5, Voyager, roughnecks...the list ...goes...on. Oh, there was that ITF-thingy too...

Hehe.

But how do you know they wouldn't have been better with MAX?
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
The rendering system in MAX is nothing compared with Lightwave's. The modellers are debatable, and I think most of it comes down to personal preference.
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
Heres to milkshape! (I never used it myself, but I know many people who do (Including boardmembers ;)))
• RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
@messiah: haha.. milkshape! you gotta be joking... not even splines or anything in there.. if you want to do anything that has no real similarities with existing geometrical bodies you have to do it vertex by vertex, and then create the faces...

I think one of the reasons why Lightwave is used (or has been used, don't know if it's still used that much) is that it's renderer and lighting system is much better than max's, where you would have to spend thousands of dollars on new renderers, when the program was more expensive than LW allready.

one thing why i favor MAX over LW-moddeler is the damn layering. i wanna be able to tweak every little part individually, and i just couldn't with the layering (probably there is some hidden feature i just didn't find ;) )

though a skilled person could do great models with any program... art is not in the tool, but in the artist...

• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
heh, it's funny.... ask ten different people you get...?

anyways... The best 3D package is the one you grew up with, because you invested so much time into learning it's interface, that to change to something else is heresey...

I use Lightwave, and will never change...

but that's me...

;)

All this debate over which 3D program to use is foolish. It is clear that the best program is Microsoft Paint. He is an example of my latest work:

http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/j/t/jtt132/enterprise.JPG

Notice the great space effect I get with a white background. It is so realistic, isn't it? The awe you all must be feeling at the life-like effect of the phasers is beyond description. Also, take note of all of that blank space. That is a metaphor for the vastness of the heavens itself. I was asked to render some art for the last Star Trek movie, but I turned it all down to continue my education and my career at Office Max.
• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
Not to mention the obligatory use of extra white space!

:D
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
I see they still haven't fixed the bug with MS Paint's depth buffer.
• Linky linky to piccy piccy of the 'roger young'? I have no idea what that is.

Though i have to say, the valley forge from the roughnecks series is much more sexier ;) (anybody have some good pics or reference material of her? I'm thinking of doing a little low-poly valley forge)
• WORFWORF The Burninator
i forgot about the shuttle and transporter room. I have those too. I wanted the bridge but it was way too big, I had no room for it and now I have even less room.

starshipmodeler.com rocks.

They used "Valley Forge" in roughnecks...damn...*makes note*

Probably a nod to "Silent Running".
